Gun won't run..... single shot musket.....
« on: August 01, 2022, 10:54:55 PM »
Hello all,
This is my first post past the introduction page.... I originally signed up to ask some questions regarding my VZ-58, which fires only 1 round before you have to manually re-cock it (which would eject the unfired round) then you would be able to fire the next subsequent round. The rifle ejected the spent casing fine and loaded the next live round. However, the trigger failed to reset.
The rifle is a "professionally" built gun on a receiver made by Assault Weapons of Ohio.... it has been back to the builder once already for another malfunction, after taking about a year to build... I'm kind of done with that guy, so it's time to get my hands dirty...
Tonight, before posting my issue here and after reading several threads on "gremlins" and other common malfunctions I decided to go downstairs and have a more in depth look at what was and wasn't moving like it should.
I was able to manually re-create the problem I was having in the field. I noticed that the disconnector, where it comes off the trigger, wasn't moving freely in it's channel causing the spring to be ineffective. I removed the trigger assembly and noticed the disconnector was binding hard in it's channel. I popped out the pin that retains the disconnector and removed it, filed and sanded down the sides that insert into the channel on the trigger and reassembled the whole thing.
Following this seemingly easy fix, I was unable to re-create the problem.
Has anyone had this problem before? The trigger and disconnector appear to be an aftermarket 902r, or whatever, part, marked with what looks like a capital "N" or "M" with USA underneath....
I have a few photos to share, but can't due to my Newbie-ness.... maybe later.
Thanks to everyone who posted how-to's and helpful tips...
That all being said, does anyone know where I can get the little "E" clips for a couple of the pins? One was missing and the other was too big....
Cheers,
DB

So is the issue resolved? If so then enjoy the rifle. And google is your friend on parts.

The issue may be resolved.... I have to get it to the range this weekend to be sure.
I just watched a video from the welding guy on this site and he addressed a similar problem in his second video if anyone else is having a problem like this.

Is your bolt carrier tabbed?  Is the tab the appropriate length?  If not get w/ forcedmarch in the stickies/pinned posts on first page of this forum.

When was your AWO receiver purchased/made?

ORF (Ohio Rapid Fire, previous name of AWO)/AWO had many reports of dubious receivers and manufacturing processes a decade ago up to aroundabout the previous owner died fairly young and unexpectedly IIRC.  Also IIRC, family now still owns/runs, and they appear to be coming out w/ new receivers and no idea of quality or manufacturing processes now.  Previously, they were selling/unloading old dubious quality receivers from founder's time...

My bolt carrier is tabbed with a pretty shabby looking weld & grind.... I'd like to see what most of tab welds should look like...

I think I bought the receiver back around 2016. I bought another receiver in 2021 for my second kit (as yet un-built). It spent about a year sitting in a Vermont shop waiting to be built before I sent the kit to Michigan....

2016 still had the old receivers floating around.  Didn't see newer ones until 2020 or 2021 IIRC.

Biggest issue is to ensure your receiver is w/in spec dimensionally, or at least that any malfunctions aren't being caused by the receiver being out of spec.

Czechpoint's LH charging handle listing shows the tab that's milled integral: https://www.czechpoint-usa.com/bolt-carrier-left-side-charging-handle/product

Sorry so late on the reply, I wanted to take it to the range for a test fire this weekend before I answered....

Hogzilla: Yeah, I disassembled the trigger and disconnector, filed and sanded down the the disconnector and cleaned up the inside of the channel on the trigger, then reassambled and function checked it. It seemed to work fine then. Today was range day: the rifle cycles fine now with both steel and brass ammo. The only problem I had was light primer strikes on 2 rounds of Tul Ammo.

Forgot to add, I bought another receiver from last year, it sounds like I should have it checked for spec before trying to find a builder to help me with the heavy lifting...?

Cheers,
DB

If your striker and recoil springs are surplus, replace with new.

Boy, it sure pays to get a “professionally-built” custom gun built by a “professional”!

A “professional” WHAT? One might ask.

Please identify said “professional builder” so that we can avoid him like the plague.

Yeah, it was all I could do to not vent about everything... but he was highly recommended on another forum, so maybe it was just me that he had a bad day with..... I guess I was just lucky....
Any other recommendations for a builder....?

Yeah, with “professional” builders, it’s hit or miss, no matter how stellar their online reputation is, which in many cases is complete bullbleep posted by shills.

It costs more to buy from a reputable company, like CSA, but at least they have a 5-year warranty, and they really do make superior rifles, with Lothar Walther barrels, etc.

However, I wouldn’t hold back on identifying the “professional” in question. If some vendor or manufacturer screws something of mine up, I have no qualms about identifying them and taking them to task online, in public. That’s one of the great things about online forums. Plus, it may keep this “professional” clown from screwing over others.
