I pulled out my 1949 chromed Duo and field stripped it to see if I could determine what would be keeping the slide from coming off.
The only thing I can think of is that the barrel is not full rotated out of the channels.
After you rotate the barrel, see if you can pull the barrel forward. Mine goes about a quarter-of-an-inch.
Being able to do that shows that the barrel is free from the channels and the slide should then be able to be removed.
Side note...after not having used my Duo or Z for a few years, I had a bit of a hard time getting it back together.
I finally remembered there is an extra step after starting to get the slide re-engaged...you have to flip the gun back up in the vertical (being careful not to let the barrel go too far forward!) to get the recoil spring and guide rods to fall back into the indentation in the frame.
