527 getting a FS Mannlicher style stock
« on: August 28, 2022, 09:23:03 AM »
I'd like an full length stock like the FS and the Mannlicher rifles have.  Who has them?

I've got a 527 carbine in 7.62 Russian with standard stock.  Stock has some damage.   Rather than fix it, I'd rather go Mannlicher style.

Any vendors have them?

Joe

I've actually seen this conversion. The CZ 527 Carbines have shorter barrels than the 527 Full Stocks and will need some work to shorten the stock to Carbine barrel length. The only place that use to carry the 527 stocks on a semi regular basis that I know of is CZ-USA. Currently CZ-USA isn't even listing this stock.

Dave, yes, I checked w CZ, and the FS stock is not listed or out-of-stock.   MDT,  B&C, GRS, don't list FS stocks as an option either.  I asked Boyd online about it, and their system said someone will get back to me Monday, so maybe?

However Richards Micro-fit, if you drill down into the ordering menu, list "Mannlicher length forearm" as an option, but "no tip or cap installed ... Available in a Full semi-oval shape only."

So Richards sounds like the best bet, if the online catalog is still current.  I'll post what Boyds and Richards say.

Richards is the only online vendor that lists a FS stock for the 527, and it's economical, at $200+.  However online reviews aren't good.  Essentially it'll take a lot of work to finish.  The other vendors (Boyds, etc) don't/won't do the full stock for the 527.  Some custom shops will do it, but that's a minimum of $2,000 and up.  Ouch!

I called around, and US Gun Inletting from Cal. will do a FS.  They are taking my orig stock as a guide, and are building a FS blank from that.  Price is $600+, with me doing the finial inletting and finish.

Brownells use to and still may offer a steel cap if you go the Micro Fit way.

David, thanks for that.  US Gun Inletting is adding an ebony tip, so I'm going that route.

I received the Mannlicher FS style stock for my CZ 527 rifle from US Gunstocks of Marysville, Ca ( http://gunstockinletting.com/index.html ).  They did a great job inletting the action and barrel channel.  Really tremendous on matching the factory stock, even doing some of the deeper, more intricate action holes.  The exterior needs rough and fine sanding, then sealer and finish.

The charge for standard claro walnut w ebony tip, duplication of my stock, and shipping was $662.  It'll be cheaper for the next guy, because now they have a CZ 527 duplication model to work from.

Armoredman,
Re the cost, I paid extra to have them make a duplication model right from my old stock.  The next guy won't have to pay that.  The inletting on this is terrific, a genuine 95%.    The cheapest stocks, like from Richards Microfit, are 1/3 of the cost, but people say that with them you end up doing a ton of work.

No other stockmaker offers a FS 527 stock, unless you go full custom and that's real $$$.

That is a very beautiful stock. Well done.  I'm looking forward to seeing the final result!

I admit I've had severe sticker shock on the small number of 527 and 550 FS models I've seen for sale lately.  There's a new 527 FS on Gunbroker currently listed for a > $2,000 "buy it now" price! Just wow.

I have also seen multiple used 550 FS models sell for more than $1,400 of late. The $ appreciation of the FS versions has surprised me. I've always loved them (witness my signature block) but had the impression they were not all that popular and relatively few were sold.

No doubt I am dreaming, but wouldn't it be nice to see CZ reissue limited numbers of "classic" 550 and 527 models, to include the FS?  I really do prefer controlled feed (vice push feed) bolt guns.  I guess it is a sign of getting old, LOL.

Best of luck with your finishing project!
