Well, in a chance visit to my BIL's father, I got to handle what he called his "older" rifle. Having heard about this firearm over the course of 30+ years and various leases, seeing him hunt with other selections...it was a privilege. Pre-64 Win Model 70...30--06. Words fail me, but it was bleeped well NICE. It's been used, taken mule deer and elk beyond white tails, Corsican rams....and a few other selections.
It wont be built again. THAT is what stuck with me. It's over, it's done and that's an end of it. Not because it CAN'T be made, but because it WON'T be. Sad, sick, disgusting and pathetic. There is NO reason that the "rifleman's rifle" had to be discontinued in favor of the new model 70, except the idea that more money could be made by creating something else that was easier, cheaper and of course "improved" versions that ...are in no way improvements.
I won't get into why this experience involves or effects my collection of CZ centerfires....
Though I would like to.
But it won't do any good, now would it?
The last (new) Remington 700 I saw, had a computer code, lawyer words and felt cheap as hell in fit and finish...shape of things to come.
