Two recoil spring questions
« on: November 11, 2022, 07:01:23 AM »
Hi,
Is there any way to determine the  recoil spring weight that's installed in your pistol if it's the spring that came with the pistol and not installed by you? Length? Wire diameter?
And does recoil spring weight contribute to muzzle flip severity?
Thanks,
           Mark

Muzzle flip is a torque created by the the axis of the barrel being above the axis of the forearm. It starts before the spring even gets involved.

The recoil spring weight can influence the severity of muzzle dip when the slide returns to battery. The stronger the spring, the more force is applied to the slide closing.

As far as measuring recoil spring weight. Not all recoil spring manufactures have concurrent spring weight assignments. I have seen a few people manufacture custom rigs for measuring recoil spring weight but they have all started by adopting one the manufactures weight assignments by testing that manufactures springs and then measuring other springs against them.

Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

There is a lab measurement device used to measure spring weights. It's a movable platen with a pressure gauge attached, which presses downward on a fixed base. The problem is that you need a length dimension to work from. Springs have different pressures at different compression lengths. That may be where some of the confusion comes from.

Recoil is there even if your barrel axis is inline with the axis of the firearm. What you describe is how recoil is felt by human.
