Re: CZ 557 with Split Barrel
« on: December 04, 2022, 11:11:53 AM »
Hello everyone, I am writing from South Tyrol / Italy and my English is very bad. But using Google translator I hope to explain my request in an understandable way.
I have a big problem.
I have a cz 557 in 30 06, a great rifle until june.
So far I've made 300 rounds of commercial ammo with it, Federal 150gr akb.
In June I looked into the barrel with an endoscope and found inner radial cracks a little behind the cartridge bearing. To date, no one has been able to tell me how these cracks formed. As a mechanical engineer, I assume that cold hammering will cause stress cracks.
You can't see anything outside.
Maybe someone has seen this before!
It's too good for me to scrap, too risky to shoot.
I would look forward to an answer!
greeting
Walter

I'm not sure that I fully understand your post. But after being fired a bit the barrel just in front of the chamber begins to look like crocodile skin. This is the erosion of steel that's caused by the propellent gases cutting/melting steel. For a brief instant on firing the gasses act similarly to a cutting torch on the barrel. This leaves a rough looking texture just in front of the chamber. As more rounds are fired the length and roughness will grow. Not sure if this is what you're seeing or not. Good Luck

I had similar "barrel issues" on a Savage brand rifle years ago. I returned the rifle to the factory, who examined it and replaced the barrel. The rifle was years out of warranty, and yet they replaced the barrel for free.

If I was in your place, I'd be contacting the factory or their service depot in Italy.

Welcome to The Forum! Is there a CZ authorized dealer in your area that can help? I concur that the best thing to do is return it to the factory and see what can be done. Can you post pictures?
