Finish Durability
« on: June 13, 2005, 05:12:24 AM »
Over on the CZ pistol discussion there has been (and continues to be) a number of threads pertaining to the durability and desirability of finishing on CZ pistols.  In part this is due to several finishes being available.  But in the several years I have been reading the rifle forum I have not seen similar discussions of rifle finish (I know that this is only two - the "real" CZ blue and the Model three stainless.).  In part this question is based on a bad experience with another manufacturer's rifle that seemed to have more than a fair share of problems - bluing, easily dented stock (it was laminated).

I own only one CZ rifle - a 550 American in 243 Win.  I am very impressed with it and am considering another that would be suitable for elk.  My first impulse is to find something in stainless with a synthetic stock, but I like the CZ quality.  My question is simple: how durable are CZ blued finishes and stock finishes?  With reasonable camp (field based) care, can they regularly hold up to a week of hunting in hostile environments (what about an Alaska hunt)?

This is a question for those experienced with using CZ rifles in such conditions.

Thanks.

I spoke with CZ-USA today concerning any future possibilities for stainless steel actions and barrels from CZ (not Montana Rifle) in synthetic stocks.  I was told that synthetic stocks are being considered - similar to the American style stocks.  The problem with stainless is the cost of stainless steel in Europe - it is considerably higher than in the USA.  CZ does not think it can be cost competitive in the USA with European priced stainless steel.

A related question, does any know what is the specific steel used in CZ actions and barrels?

Thanks,
