First Disappointing CZ Rifle.
« on: January 03, 2003, 09:02:23 AM »
I went to a gun show this weekend and saw the first CZ firearm that has disappointed me, either looks or shooting. The rifle in question was a Model 452 Varmint and the stock looked like something on a Military Surplus rifle. It did not look like it had any finish, dull wood and what appeared to be a crack or improperly cut wood. This was a new rifle. Needless to say that I passed it over although a 452 Varmint is what I was seeking.
On the plus side I also saw a 527 Varmint with Grey laminated stock that was a beauty.

Sorry to hear that.  CZ does not seem to use a particular grade wood on any rifle (except for the Prestige/Premium models).  I have compared a few otherwise identical CZ rifle models 452s, 550s, etc. that were a mile apart in stock quality.  They were all functional, but while some were dark with beautiful patterns and nice finish, others have looked like the one you described.  The checkering varies in quality as well.  I'm not sure I've ever seen a CZ rifle with flawless checkering.  When I do, I hope I have enough money to buy it. :)   I really like those grey laminated stocks, too.

In a article on the Cz-527 last year in Shooting Times, they mentioned a particular gunsmith who recheckers CZ stocks.  Something I may look into sometime down the road.  Have nice wood in my CZ stock but the checkering is so-so.

Any decent stockmaker(or highly qualified gunsmith) just pours a small amount of Accuraglass(walnut colour) on baddly done job. Then files the excess away & recheckers the surface with proper checkering tool(lines per inch has to be the same or finer). A 15 minute job which will correct this problem. Everthing starts by choosing a good dense well figured walnut stock(dark) with no sap-wood. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: Jungleman what was the problem with stock? Bad fnish? Poor quality wood? Stock configuration not to your expectation?

CZ-UB does'nt mfgr. the wooden stocks they have them sub-contracted by another Czech Rep. firm. As is the case with more exquisite wood(seller wants more money than Mfgr, Sug. Sales Price), one can usualy ask a lower price if looking for nothing more than a utilitarian rifle. Once you've seen a nice CZ it's mighty hard to go to utilitarian grade wood.

The reverse sometimes happens.  I was in a small shop in Ft Worth, Texas, in December and looked at a 527 American in 222 Rem.  It had beautiful wood with nice figure.  I couldn't stand it and bought it.  Can't have too many rifles.

Gary:

Sorry to hear about your poor experience while looking for a 452 Varmint.  But don't give up just yet.  CZ rifles can sport some outstanding furniture at times.  Here are a couple of pics of my new 452 Varmint:

Take care.  Marko

Also, when I was picking up my rifle, another customer was picking up a nearly identical tiger-striped 452 in .17HRM --- would have loved to have taken the other rifle home too, as they would have made quite a striking pair.

But in any event, don't give up a hope.  There are nice stocks to be found on the 452.

Take care.  Marko

Marko,

That's a beautiful piece of wood.  I hope I don't see anything that good in the near future, because I might have to sell something and buy it!  Did you have to pay any extra for it?  Thanks for sharing the photos with us.

No, I was fortunate not to have to pay anything extra for the tiger striped stock.  However, I'm curious about the wood, as I thought all of the 452 Varmints were supposed to have walnut stocks.  Mine is definitely not walnut.

Take care.  Marko

CZ's .22 production started for military training rifles. Many of the 452s that come to market are canceled military orders or contract overruns. Don't be so surprised if you find a rifle that looks like it should be a military beater, because that is probably its intended purpose.

The new canceled Arab contract 452s are beautiful. They have a 28" barrel, orange/red Arab AK colored furniture, and 300m sights. Even with that long barrel they balance nicely and the stocks look great, especially for a canceled military rifle.
