Has anyone ever shot the 581 O/U?
« on: October 04, 2003, 05:30:04 AM »
I have been looking into purchasing a 12 gauge over under and trying to keep it affordable at the same time. I have posted mostly  in the P-01 area so far but am new to CZ long arms.
This gun would be used primarily for skeet, with possible hunting trips in the far future. One other question.. I know most rifled slugs are used in pump shotguns, but can they be used in an O/U as well?

Someone (maybe me, I can't remember) asked about this quite a while back.  I'm not sure if anyone has ever seen one, much less shot one.  I've found them listed as special order guns with a dealer or two and the price was around $750.  I do not know what kind of choke setup they have.  The only rifled slugs I have bought recommend using improved cyl., but there may be others out there that will shoot fine through other chokes.  I have used an over-and-under for 20+ years and think they are an excellent choice for bird hunting and other sport shooting.  With good condition barrels and the appropriate chokes an over-and-under should shoot slugs as well as anything.  I know that the Browning and Beretta o/u's are fine choices and have heard plenty of good things about the Rugers, but I know very little about the CZ.  If you want to go cheaper, Baikal makes several o/u's that seem to be built pretty well (if you are strong enough to open and close them :D ).  I don't know what you plan to shoot with slugs, but if you are going to use the gun as self protection against bears or something else big and dangerous you might consider a higher capacity alternative to the over-and-under.  Let us know if you find a 581 anywhere.
