Making powder
« on: April 08, 2023, 10:22:10 PM »
Not smokeless, ofc course, but a buddy is bound and determined to have me learn how to make black powder. This could be fun, something to do during my "vacation" to keep the mind focused. I have all the tools so far to begin practicing. Yes, it is totally legal here.
Two problems - I lack a powder tester for one. I saw those for sale years ago and laughed, who would buy something like that? Now? me.
Two - CZ never made a black powder firearm, so keeping this in line with CZ, any suggestions for a CZ sort of related BP firearm?
Also can be used in black powder cartridges, but at best, this stuff will only be 80% of commercial grade stuff, more like 65%.

Since you're about to get into it I''d like to send you a PM with an attachment (word document) I copied off another forum.

Supposed to have been from an old article written by a minister about his grandmother who made her own black powder for decades using an old family "recipe" handed down through generations of mountain people in the east side of the country.

Never messed with this myself, may not be complete directions, then again it might be.  You could run it by your buddy and see what he says as he does have experience making his own.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

There is a very lengthy thread on the Cast Boolits web site on making black powder. Vary informative on the process and results.

I am quite active on CB, great website. That's where I learned a bunch about my cap and ball wheelguns and my buddy the gunsmith really shines.
Allow me to demonstrate;

My babies;

Pietta 1851 .44, and Uberti 1860 .44

Uberti stainless .44 Remington New Model Army

.54 caliber T/C Renegade

And the Kit Carson my buddy LAGS saved, (there is a HUGE thread at CB showing step by step how he rebuilt this from a pawn shop junker into a beautiful rifle my son absolutely loves), 54 caliber smokepole. Yes, it's a left hander.

@M1A4ME, thank you very much, that was entertaining, and I did pass it along!

I have some ball milled powder drying right now, and I will screen in probably tomorrow to see how well this works.

Saw a primer tester similar (idea) to that powder tester.

Looks like you're fully setup to "unload" black powder.
In God we trust; On 'Starting Load' we rely.
