Chelonia mydas, aka: Testudines
« on: May 14, 2023, 10:08:38 PM »
I like turtles. The scientific name for turtles is Chelonia mydas, aka: Testudines. They can be pets, dinner or even a delicious candy treat that doesn’t involve the actual use of turtles at all. I know, crazy right? I started a previous thread, titled “Imgur question” that got slightly out of hand, so I decided to lighten up the thread, which I started, with some good ol silliness. But someone kept deleting my silly posts about turtles…on the thread I started. So I decided to start a new thread. One who studies turtles is referred to as a herpetologist. I think it’s safe to say, I got the herpes. ;D

I like your style.  I think we would get along fine over an adult beverage or three.

I remember my dad talking about how good turtle soup was (USAF, spent some time in Okinawa, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc.

One day we were out riding 3 wheelers and a big old snapping turtle was crossing the old railroad bed we were on at the time.  We got off the 3 wheelers, sort of surrounded the turtle and it would hiss at us.  I got a stick and was going to push it out of the way and it grabbed the stick and would not let go.  The saying around home is if a snapping turtle bites something it won't let go till it thunders.

Anyway, I had a sort of a box/container on the rack on the back of my Kawasaki.  I picked the turtle up (it wouldn't let go of the stick) and put it in the box, got on the 3 wheeler and fired it up (we were on our way home but it was several miles).

Every little bit my brother in law would holler at me (the signal that the turtle climbing out of the box) and I'd jerk the handlebars back and forth and it would fall into the bottom of the box and we'd keep riding.  Got home, grabbed another stick and the turtle bit it and I picked it up out of the box and put it in the garage.

I went inside, called my dad to tell him I had a good sized snapping turtle in the garage for him.  His response?  "I don't want that turtle, take it out in the woods and let it go."  So I let it go in the woods out back of the garage.

I've seen (Gauley River and Coal River in WV) turtles in the water that looked like big round table tops.  I waded up to with 3 or 4 feet of what I thought was a crumpled up rusted 50 gallon drum in the Coal River one day while bass fishing.  I was standing there casting the spinner out into the current, glancing at the old smashed up drum and wondering where it came from and how long it had been in the water when I saw a big "foot."  The foot turned in a big leg and the leg ran up to a big shell (what I thought was the crumpled up 50 gallon drum) and then I could see that big head and "beak".  I think I set a record for getting out of the water and up that muddy river bank.  I didn't even slip/fall.  I went down river aways and waded back in to fish being more careful/observant of the river bottom around me.

Oh, not talking the top of the drum, the turtle was the whole crumpled/bent/smashed/rusted looking drum.  Not the size of a new drum.  But maybe half the drum.  That head/eyes/beak still spook me when I think about how close I was.

Dang M1A4ME, I’ve never seen one that big but I’ve seen some good sized ones. The only time I’ve ever been scared out of the water like that is when my dad accidentally hooked a medium-size gator while fishing when I was real young. He ended up killing it and had a rope tied to it’s upper jaw holding it open. I remember running past it and cutting my pinky toe on one of its teeth. Good times. ;D

Welcome.  I remember when I was a young boy we had a box turtle in our basement to keep down the bugs.  We had it for several years.  We used to take raw hamburger down to him for a treat.  His name was Henry.  Then one day we found an egg down there and so Henry became Henrietta.

The biggest one I've ever seen was 3 weeks ago at the NC State Zoo. To enter you walk across a foot bridge over a big pond. I looked down 15' to the water and there was a turtle that must have been 24" across its back. Huge !

Not sure what kind of turtles I used to see while bass fishing.

The Gauley River and New River form the Kanawha River which dumps into the Ohio River.  Coal River?  I have no idea what it finally empties into but it could be the Kanawha River or the Ohio River.

Quick look up says the Alligator snapping turtle is the biggest freshwater turtle in the US.

It can have a shell up to just short of 32" in length and can weigh up to 175 lbs.  They like rivers/streams vs. ponds/lakes/swamps.  They're a predator.

175 lbs.  That's a big darn turtle.

This is all very humorous and good natured and stuff. Absolutely and completely apolitical and just a bit of fun. However, anyone want to guess why a couple of posts got removed from this thread? It was only 9 posts long and people just couldn't help themselves. Long standing members at that too.

Carry on.

Not sure about the posts, or even what thread they were in.  Stuff sort of goes over my head sometimes.

Now I'm wondering if the start of this was calling a moderator, or saying a moderator was similar to a turtle.

Hope not.  If so, I'll bow out of this thread now.  I really did think it was about turtles.

My bad. I’ve been gone from the site for a bit and didn’t even think about.

No, it wasn’t to call a moderator at turtle. The thread I started previously got a little out of hand, so I was making goofy posts with turtle references to flip the mood. Some of those turtle posts got deleted and I couldn’t figure out who did it so I just started another goofy thread. I’m a goofball at heart.

Glad you're back.  We need more input/threads/posts here.  It seems to get a little slow at times.

It’s funny, I have a list of people that I would gladly hit with a truck. But when it comes to helpless animals in the road, I can’t help myself. I’ve darted across multiple lanes of traffic to grab a turtle. I used to work for an oil field company driving a 5 ton crane truck. We were on our way to a job site and a rabbit ran out in front of us. Just based on reflex alone, I swerved to try and avoid the rabbit. Scared the absolute you know what out of my coworker. I don’t know if I’ve ever been cussed at that much. ;D I definitely wouldn’t do it again.
