CZ 75 SC Massada
« on: May 18, 2023, 11:00:41 PM »
I've been looking for a CZ 75 Massada for a while, before I finally bought one through a GunBroker auction.  I had bid on other CZ 75 Massada pistols, but the price always ended up higher than I wanted to pay.  I finally purchased one in November 2022 that was affordable, but that's because the finish was in poor condition.  But the barrel was good, and I knew I could get it refinished.  So I'm now working on my first CZ 75 project gun.

The CZ 75 Massada has interesting markings, with a Jewish Menorah on the slide.  The CZ 75 Massada was made for Israeli government use.  I haven't found a clear answer on who used it in Israel, but I think it was used by their National Parks service, and possibly other government agencies.  Massada (also spelled Masada) is now an Israeli national park, so that would make sense that their National Parks service would have requested it to be stamped this way.

I sent an email to CZ to ask when this particular serial number was made and who it was made for, and they told me the Production Date was 5/2/2007, but they said they were not allowed to tell me what agency purchased it in Israel.  The import stamp is discreetly located underneath the trigger guard and reads "C.A.I. GEORGIA, VT - MADE IN CZECH REPUBLIC - CZ".

Edit: I learned after I originally posted this that CZ stamps the date of production above the extractor.  I did not realize the significance of that rollmark.  So the production year is actually 1992, rather than 2007.

Here's the starting canvas for this project.  I'll be posting more pictures to show the progression of this restoration project.

Please let me know if you have experience with the CZ 75 Massada, or if you know any cool facts about it's history.

Let us know if you find out anything more on the history of these. Lots of myths out there on the interwebs and several old threads in the forum regarding their origins. I was unaware that they were made as late as 2002. Here is my 1993 vintage which appeared to have been fired very little when I got it and only minimal holster wear.

That's a beauty!  It looks like yours has different sights.  Mine came with tritium sights that are long burned out.

That's really interesting that they were in production for such a relatively long time.  I can't imagine there was that much demand from them by the original customers.  They must have been made in small batches over the years.

So the first thing I had to do with my project gun was to decide what route to take with refinishing it.  Should I try to restore it to something resembling factory original?  Or should I go my own route and add my own personal touches.  After internal debating, I deciding to make it my own, rather than restore to factory original condition.

With that, I wanted to first address the barrel.  I like to have barrels with strong corrosion resistance, so I thoroughly cleaned the bore of the barrel, which actually looked to have been shot very little, and I sent it off to JagerWerks to get black nitride treated.

After a few months, I got it back and it looked great.  Here's a before and after picture.  Note that the after picture shows the barrel after being shot, so it shows a small amount of exterior wear, which is expected.  My main reason for getting the nitride treatment was to protect the bore.

Now that I had the barrel taken care of, I had to decide what route to take with the rest of the CZ 75.  After investigating several types of refinishing, I decided to Cerakote the frame, slide, and several of the small parts.  There are some good videos on YouTube that show how to take apart the CZ 75, so I went ahead and bought the few tools that I needed but didn't already have.  I fully disassembled the pistol and then cleaned it in an ultrasonic cleaner.  Here's a picture of the stripped parts before I took them to my local Cerakote coater, minus the firing pin block.

CZ 75 SC Massada is new again!  Got it Cerakoted in Graphite Black, replaced a few of the springs and small parts, and added black thin aluminum grips from CZ Custom.  It's now ready for some quality family time at the range on Memorial Day!

This has been a really fun project, and I've learned a lot about the CZ 75 platform along the way.  It's made me appreciate the CZ 75 so much more.
