223 or 22-250?
« on: February 04, 2004, 03:26:10 PM »
I am trying to make up my mind between a 223 and a 22-250 CZ 550.(even considered 243) It will be used mostly for varmit hunting and I need a small enough caliber that my wife is comfortable shooting it.  Anyone care to share their opinion on this one with me? Thanks!

I would go with the 223. Cheaper to shoot, and less noise and recoil. The barrel will last longer too.

Is your wife hunting in a cold region(is she wearing a big bulky jacket)? What type of varmint are you(you & her) hunting: gophers, coyotes, wolves, fox?

Have you had a look at the .17 Remington round?(trappers #1 choice)

Since you were considering .243, were you thinking possible deer hunting?

What type of terrain are you planning to hunt: open plains, heavy brush, valleys,?

Does your wife have any experience shooting anything(rifle, shotgun, etc.) in her life?

No cold here, Texas. Coyotes mostly, hogs sometimes. I doubt I will ever get her to take a shot at a deer although I would like her to feel confident enough to do so if she decided to. As for the terrain we have a pretty good mix, we hunt in the brush of East texas and the wide open of the Hill Country. I am sure she will probably do more target shooting than anything. Yes she is an experienced shooter, 250 on her concealed :D  As for rifles she has been shooting a Winchester 243 that I just sold today so we can get a new CZ.

Sorry for the late post, since your wife is an experienced shooter, go for the .22-250 you'll never regret it, the opposite is'nt true(.223 choice)
