Agreed that the .223 is better than the 7.62x39 for accuracy, hence my wanting to get one for the 40% target shooting. Also, the one time a year I do go varmint shooting, the 7.62 seems like overkill. I like the carbine, thought, for cheap plinking with mil surplus and with good factory ammo (I don't reload) I can go hunt game that would be too big for the .223 round. So both would serve different roles, which brings me back to the original question of accuracy between the two.
As far as the 97 goes, that's a big 10-4 on hand size and being a school teacher I have an entire summer to familiarize myself with it... every day, for three months, if I so wish.
