CZ 22 Hornet
« on: July 19, 2023, 07:26:12 PM »
I have an outing planned this weekend and it involves my CZ 527 Full Stock in 22 Hornet. Since I was going to the range today anyway the rifle went along to confirm the scope was still looking where it is supposed to be. Had a not particularly unusual occurrence with a reloaded Hornet case. One of the cases separated. Fortunately, my broken shell extractor lives in the ammo bag along with the ammo, so it was pretty much a non-issue. The silly little case extractor sure is handy when a case splits on me though.

That's a neat little varmint rifle.  How does it shoot?

I bought those for my M1A and M1 Garand years ago because people said it was a good idea to have them with you.  I think they may still be in the bag of "tools" that is in my range bag, but I've never had to use one, so far.  Having said that I might need one the next time I take a rifle to the range though.  Jinxed.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Your correct about jinxing yourself, never tempt the fates. I have a number of 22 Hornets and my reloads do everything wrong when loading for that cartridge. First the brass gets full length resized. Trying to keep each different rifles/pistol brass separated when gopher shooting just doesn't work for me. Invariably a different chambers brass ends up in the wrong bag and tends to lock up a rifle if just neck sized. If you section a piece of Hornet brass, it's not much thicker above the web than 17 HMR rimfire brass. I'm down to about 7000 pieces of 22 Hornet brass from around 10000 by counting the 100 primer boxes. Come winter when they get reloaded there's no tracking how many times each piece has been reloaded and with the arrival of spring, they all end up in the main ammo bag. Some brass simply ends up being shot more than others. This week end we are going to a new area for us, and we will be doing the I.O.W.A. thing (idiots out wandering around) and since were basically taking our rifles for a walk in the woods no point in carrying one that's heavier than necessary. The little Full Stock wears a 1-4X scope and shot 2 inch's high at 100 yards just like it's supposed to and the 3 shot group was right around an inch. After that I shot rocks on the 200-yard back stop with it. With more scope I imagine it would do better, but I don't want a lot of scope on this rifle. If a more serious Hornets needed, then there are better choices available.

Never heard it called that before.

It's what we used to do when groundhog hunting.  Find a new place (with permission to hunt) and then just pick a spot to meet (shady tree was always good) and then split up and walk around looking for groundhogs, holes, places where you could tell they'd been grazing, etc.  After a couple trips you had it figured out and might move the to a different shady tree.  I only had the one rifle (Rem. M700 VS in .223) that I was willing to hunt with.  But when your 24 or 25 years old a varmint rifle doesn't seem that heavy.

Have fun, enjoy the days.

A 527 in 22 Hornet is my next hopeful find. But I'm not optimistic about prices.

I posted on another more general forum about a CZ 527 Full Stock in 22 Hornet for sale the day after July 4th. This combination seems to be a bit of a grail gun for a few people. It was selling (not an auction) for $700 thru one of the Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops on a gun selling site. Thats the best price I've seen on one of these for quite a while. Only priced about $50 more than a new 527 was just before CZ discontinued the little Mauser. The listing didn't last long. My 22 Hornet Full Stocks old enough to have a CZ-USA import stamp with the Oak Hurst California address instead of the Kansas stamp.

CrossTimber,

A firm in California did a true 95% inletting on a Mannlicher style stock for my 527.  See  http://gunstockinletting.com/index.html
I lent them my orig stock, so they've got the pattern for the CZ 527 now.  They have been really great to work with.  Quickly answering all my beginner style questions.  Their guidance really makes the difference.

I wish I had/could even afford a Hornet in a 527. Im retired, my wife is about to be, we just replaced our roof....and the list goes on. I have wanted a 527 in the Hornet, even with all the handloading difficulties people talk about. But, my finacial situation probably means that is unlikely to ever happen

I'm lucky to have the things I do. I look at DavidS pics of his 527 collection and drool with unashamed envy. BUT! I do have my trio of the great little rifles, so I am thankful, and sometimes what you want is not as important as what you have. I've learned that over time, even though it's sometimes hard to remember.

I turned 80 yrs old 10-20-23. And my CZ 527 American in 22 Hornet is a God Sent wonderful rifle for me. My CZ 527 22 Hornet is the most accurate hands down, 22 Hornet I have ever owned or even shot.  The Boy`s from CZ in KC found it for me several years ago. And it has become  just one of my all time very Special Treasures. I use it for just about all the Hunting I do now especially Varmint Hunting.

Began acquiring the CZ 527's back in the late 1980's when they first started showing up in the states. Back then I was mostly using Ruger's or Remington's with the odd model 70 thrown in as varmint rifles. After discovering the little CZ action if I had call for a 223 class or smaller caliber rifle then the 527 generally got the nod. It didn't hurt any that in the way back when the CZ's were more than reasonably priced the proverbial "best bang for the buck" as it were. The CZ Hornets still show up for sale on occasion and every once in a while, they aren't priced too dearly. The Hornets are a lot of fun, keep the faith and watch the various web gun listers and hope to get lucky, you won't be disappointed. I'm still hoping to find a 22 Hornet American to rebarrel as a 22 Hornet Varmint, similar to the 17 Hornet Varmint 527's, it's one of the rifle options I wish CZ had offered when they were still in production.
