Problem on cz550 varmint laminated
« on: August 22, 2023, 09:56:38 PM »

shooting over the weekend, the screw that holds the stock to the action broke, I put photos so you can see how it was cut
Just before that happened, the rifle began to lose its usual precision, probably because it was loose or a little broken.
Do you think that apart from replacing it, it would be good to make a bedding?
thank you

Can't give you a definitive answer, but if the rifle shot well before the screw broke I don't see why you'd need to bed it.

You could just replace the screw and then bed it later if it seems to need it.
It's not saving any water if you have to flush it over and over....

Check the stock and make sure the action lug is making good contact and nothing is out of place in the stock.  The bolt should not be taking any recoil load, perhaps it broke due to no lug contact with the stock?   (I'm not much of a rifle expert.)

^^ Great advice. ^^

And... most of these bolts have a specific torque... as in "set with a torque wrench". It's not as much as you would think. Anschutz publishes a torque for their target rifles and it makes a HUGE difference.

CZ scope ring screws the ones that hold the two halves around the scope tend to be pretty soft and deform/shear easily. The action screw on my CZ 452-455 and 527 rifles don't seem to be quite as soft but it doesn't take much effort to mess up the screwdriver slot either. There is always the possibility you got a one-off bum screw but as others have suggested over torquing/stressing these could be the culprit. Just a guess on my part but if the bottom of your rifles recoil lug isn't sitting against the stock it could be flexing just a small bit there during recoil and the screw finally fatigued thru. Yours is an odd one I haven't seen an action screw shear in that way before.

Okay. I figured it had to be something with more recoil than some sort of prairie dog caliber.

Still odd though.
