Vz.58 Side Rail Screw Torque Specs
« on: August 31, 2023, 03:05:43 PM »
Hi folks,

After finding many rifle platforms wanting as substitute standards for my family's stable of ARs, I am not only glad I gave the Vz.58 a try, but I am in love!  My recent-production CSA example has proven flawlessly reliable and accurate of 2,350 rounds as of last week; something that not even my several Arsenal Kalashnikovs I have owned were able to do, and I am finally ready to adopt it fully into my stable.  As such, I am customizing the furniture, and setting it up for optics.

I just acquired a Czechpoint Skeletonized optics side mount rail, and am ready to install it.  I have the full torque tools and equipment to do a proper, armory job of installing the rail.  I have built ARs (including Dutch-production 1950s AR-10s on semi-auto lowers from parts kits), Garands, and Kalashnikovs in my law office/machine shop, and I believe in doing everything very carefully by the book.

The instructions for the side rail installation (just as so many firearms parts and assemblies) do not provide torque specifications for the receiver screws, nor do they give a recommended thread locker.  I believe I have the thread locker part figured out, as I have long experience with many types, and I swear by Rocksett, but am hoping someone here can provide torque specs for the screws.  I have also contacted Czechpoint's armorer, but I know they are often strapped for time, and I would appreciate if anyone can provide the specs to which I need to torque those receiver screws, as with Rocksett, it is more or less a permanent installation.

Thanks in advance!   :)

Have you inquired directly with Czechpoint or Czech Small Arms?

I would lean towards using whatever the standard torque spec is for that fastener size.  Provided they're steel screws and since screwing into a steel receiver, that's probably what any official/recommended OEM specs originate from anyways.

Separately and FWIW -- I prefer to use Vibra-tite for optics mounting in locations that won't be subjected to heat, and what I would use here.  I try to keep rocksett to only high heat applications like muzzle devices or red dots mounted to top rails on the Vz58...
I use purple or blue locktite most everywhere else not subjected to heat.

And if you're using this type of fastener -- snugging it up with a screwdriver with swappable bits should be sufficient, just don't wrench on it.

Let us know if you get an answer and congrats on your Vz58.

Thanks for the tip; I have some VC-3 on the way to use on the screws.  They are M5, but not knowing the exact grade of steel, I am going to wait (possibly a very long one) for the torque specs from the importer before attaching it.

You're welcome for the tip, but credit to ADM who ship it gratis with all their mounts...

Dan Brown might be willing to tell you the specs -- he's the expert on all things Czechpoint.  Don't know if he's still with them, but was for years...

Can't thank you enough there, RSR; I got in touch with Mr. Brown, and he is the man!  He gave me all the info I needed, and it is really cool corresponding with the world expert on the Samopal platform.
