08/31/23 Range Trip
« on: August 31, 2023, 07:01:40 PM »
Took the new/old P07 DUTY .40, the M&P Shield Plus with the .40 S&W and .357 SIG barrels and the wife and her M&P Equalizer.

First up was the Shield Plus with the .40 S&W barrel.  Shot some AAC 180 grain FMJ and AAC 180 grain hollow points.  The 180 grain FMJ didn't impress me.  The 180 grain hollow points show promise.  I will be buying more boxes of it.  By the way, the AAC .40 S&W 180 grain hollow point ammo says it's loaded with Hornady XTP bullets with a muzzle velocity of 1,000 fps.

I'm not posting my sorry .357 SIG target.  I fought my glasses the whole time I was there and a painful/throbbing right leg for over half the time.  My wife didn't have any issues (other than never having shot a .357 SIG, let alone in a sub compact sized pistol frame/size).  This target contains a group shot with her Equalizer 9MM and the Shield Plus with the .357 SIG barrel and 125 grain FMJ ammo.  The big hole to the left of the bullseye is 2 rounds of 9MM and 4 rounds of .357 SIG.

At the end I was hurting bad enough I only shot two groups with the P07 DUTY .40.  First with the AAC 180 grain hollow points (loaded 6 in the magazine instead of 5).

Then 5 shots of the Nosler 135 grain hollow points and Blue Dot powder my other CZ's seem to like so well.  Way more flash and bang than the AAC 180 grain hollow points.

I asked my wife if she'd like to shoot the old P07 with the AAC hollow points and she said she'd like to shoot it.  I had her dry fire it 3 times and then loaded 5 rounds in the a magazine and made it ready for her.  She shot first shot a bit high, second shot a bit low, third shot near the middle of the orange bullseye and laid it down and said she was done.  She hit the middle of the "orange" and she didn't want to shoot it anymore.  She had two comments.  She thought it kicked more than the Equalizer and she like the P07 trigger better than the Equalizer trigger.  Guess I'll have to tear that Equalizer down again and try to improve the trigger pull.

Did I mention it was a pretty good day.

The Shield Plus project (turning a 9MM platform into a .40 S&W and .357 SIG gun is moving along, slowly, but postive in direction/results so far.

You know, I get pictures of the targets but usually forget the pistols.  Still got to clean them.  I'll take pics of the Shield Plus variations.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Pictures of the pistols

2010 made P07 DUTY .40 S&W

Picture an M&P Shield Plus .40 S&W (10 shot magazine currently.)

Pictures of an M&P Shield Plus .357 SIG (same slide and magazines as the .40 S&W version).  With that threaded barrel and compensator on it.  The compensator has a ringed sleeve that screws onto the barrel and then the compensator has three set scres that clamp it to the ringed sleeve.  That eliminates thread damage on the barrel.  I'm hoping an o-ring at the back of the threaded section of barrel will hold the ring/compensator on during firing (I forgot to put a couple o-rings in the box with the barrel when we went to the range and hand tight on the ringed sleeve did not hold it tight as it came loose while firing the second magazine.)

Both of these use slightly modified Shield Plus 9MM magazines.  The Shield Plus 10 shot 9MM magazine uses a highly modified full size .40 S&W magazine follower and can hold 8 rounds of .40 S&W.  The Shield Plus 9MM 13 shot magazine uses a slightly modified 9MM Shield Plus magazine follower and can hold 10 rounds of .40 S&W.  I'm hoping the 15 shot Shield Plus 9MM magazine with modified 9MM Shield Plus follower will be able to hold 12 rounds of .40 S&W cartridges.  The idea would be to carry with the 10 shot magazine and have the 12 round magazines as back up IWB on the left side.  A small, lightweight, accurate .40 S&W concealed carry handgun.

Now that is a good report!!

I'm pleasantly surprised that the zero requirements didn't change much.  When I did a three caliber conversion on an aluminum framed Sig P-226, I had to go to an adjustable sight and remember how many clicks I had to change it for each caliber, but I only used one slide for 9mm, 40, and 357 Sig.  And I had to change recoil springs.  I'm thinking two separate slides, one for 9 and one for 40/357 Sig is a much better way to go.
