new CZ Hammer Classic with hammer not firing
« on: November 05, 2023, 02:52:07 PM »
I recently became a proud new owner of a CZ 12Ga Hammer Classic, after receiving it as a retirement gift from my sons. Very pleased with the gun as we are becoming accustomed to it for an upcoming sporting clay shoot. The gun is smooth and shoots great. Several hundred rounds through it before we made the shoot. At the shoot, I had shoot 20 or so rounds through it and suddenly the rear trigger would not fire the left hammer. Made another round and the same thing. I can squeeze the trigger, it moves back to the fired position, and stays there, but the hammer will not release. I can pull the hammer back lightly and the trigger will return to the ready position. I had to move to my brothers Weatherby over and under. Very disheartening. I was so looking forward to shooting the event with my new Hammer Classic. Any and all suggestions, recommendations or comments are welcome.

Part 1
Welcome from Georgia.

Part 2
Sorry to hear about your issue.

I am a CZ lover. You can tell that by the post count. I was also the Youth Shooting Coordinator at a big Atlanta area gun club utilized by 4 or 5 youth shotgun teams. 4H, Scholastic Clays, etc. One of the coaches was a gunsmith and worked on all the kid's shotguns. We got to be really close friends and he told me that CZ shotguns "simply did not hold up for use in competition". Hunting, where you fire 50 shots a year, yes fine. But completion where kids might fire 1000 rounds per month, no way. He had seen several fail and wouldn't allow the parents to consider them.

When I went to buy a hunting shotgun I was told "buy the 3 B's" (Berretta, Browning, Benelli).

Maybe others have different ideas, but that's my 2 cents.
Congrats on retirement. If you can stay busy, you'll love it.

Thanks for responding. I was really hoping for a more favorable response. With my sons purchasing the gun, this may be a big let down for them as well as me. The son that made the purchase is going to try to contact the warranty people with CZ and and request a warranty repair. Fingers crossed. I really like the gun, it really shoots great.Again, thanks for the response.

"One data point doesn't make a curve."

I fully understand and sympathize with your predicament.

Don't forget, I'm giving you one (questionable) piece of data.

I would certainly have the gun repaired. It may still be under warranty. Maybe the warranty guys do a mandated update to some internal parts that is not common knowledge. Maybe after an official CZ-USA repair, everything will be OK. However, what happens after firing another 1000 rounds will give you a second data point.

All the best.
