CZ 550 ?
« on: December 07, 2023, 05:12:05 PM »
Hello all,

I have an older CZ 550 FS in 308 win.

I joined to get advice on proper rings to mount a scope/

Any advice on which 30mm rings fit the dovetailed receiver with the recoil slot machined into the receiver.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Thanks

People have found that what works on one, may well not work on another rifle (same model and everything) as far as whether you might need high or medium rings. That has been the case for me anyway, it took trial and error to figure out. I cant explain it.

I have some CZ rings and some Burris rings on my rifles. No real preference except that I have found the screws on CZ rings to be a bit delicate. All my scopes are 1 inch, I am not sure who makes the 30mm rings. Sorry.

I installed my scope so long ago don't remember.  The factory rings were too low for the scope I went with. You'll  need to pick your scope before figuring ring height.

Yes, Warner makes some 30mm rings for the 550.  Saw a set hanging on the wall at my LGS the other day.

Kinda late to the party here, but I just bought a set of Warne rings for my 557 American.  They do make them for 30mm scopes.  Medium height rings provided plenty of clearance between the scope and barrel.  They are really solid IMO.  And they look great on the rifle.  Got them from Optics Planet.

Thank you for posting this. It would be more helpful to the OP if you could tell us the objective diameter of your scope.

Most of the scopes I have mounted on the various 550s I've owned all had 40mm Objective bells.

Equally important is bolt arm clearance, that's what I had some difficulty with. Strangely what worked on one didn't necessarily work on another.

The scope I mounted was an NC Star 3-9x40 with 1” barrel that I had stashed away for a while.  The 40mm objective actually measured a bit over 47mm in total diameter and still left more than 1/4” of clearance to the barrel with the medium height rings. The bolt handle clears the scope eyepiece by about 1/4" and works okay for me.  As Crosstimbers mentioned, the particular combination of scope and bolt handle could offer some interference problems. This one happened to work well for me.

For what it's worth, to measure for scope ring height I placed spacer blocks on top of the receiver dovetails and set the barrel of the scope on top of them to visualize the clearances.  Warne's website gives dimensions for the distance from the top of the receiver dovetail to the bottom of the scope barrel.  .425" for Med. rings, and .535" for High rings.  I got very close using 7/16" (.437) and 1/2" (.500) blocks.  There are formulas to calculate scope ring height, but I used this method to be able to actually see the clearances firsthand.
