My 40 has a steel rod, but it also has a full length dust cover. I believe the standard 9mm has a short plastic guide rod.

The 75 B in 40S&W l bought used in August came with a plastic installed and another with steal guide rod and a spring that is 2 coils longer. The steal guide is harder to install. I don't know if one is better than the other.

I have a 75B stainless and a 75B Compact.  They both came with plastic guide rods from the factory.
