Cz 75 short rail - differences in grips
« on: January 24, 2024, 12:22:47 PM »
Is anyone aware if changes occurred in the frame where the grip fits on early 1977 models?
In other words , do later and more modern grips fit?

Looking for an answer from someone with personal experience.

Thanks.

No experience with one that early but with one as late as the last of the Short Rails in 1980. Modern grips fit. There is one small difference in the coverage of the upper part and to the rear of the frame due to a slightly different shape. Eg., the slim Shadow type aluminum grips lack full coverage but not something easily noticed. I have a photo somewhere that illustrates. Will have to search for it later and will update when I find it.

Update: don’t have a photo with a Short Rail but early Pre-B should be the same. Note the differences in the corner notch. The early frames have a slightly taller cut that might not be properly covered if using a grip based on a modern frame. I would say mostly cosmetic. Note - hard chrome finish is not original to that 1980.

Thanks!
I pick up my 1977 short rail Monday.
It comes with very swelly original wooden grips and I would love the Bakelite waffle grips. Impossible to find , and I don’t like the modern aluminium ones.
I have seen some rather nice wooden versions and might consider them

Here’s that grip on a 1980 SR. I think the quality of their grips is average. There’s a very tiny gap, if one can even call it that with tolerances in manufacturing. Nill-Griffe grips are nice but they are quite tall and has just a hairline clearance for the safety lever on the left side. Original wooden grips have a small cutout for it. Marschal (HU) grips are high quality and tall enough to cover that notch but allows a lot more clearance for the safety lever than the Nills.

Thanks for the extra info.
I finally picked it up Monday, and its pristine, having been holstered in service and in a collection since the 80s.
Indeed, I do have a Nill thumb rest on my non B 75SA as you can see, wonderfully tight tolerances, and shoot wonderful, and the wooden grips that came on the short rail fit well.
I do like a swell in general and these are super "round", very fat, but just really work well for this pistol. CZ stock rubber are comfortable but ruin the originality of the pistol, and the Nill fit well and are my usual go to, but suit the balance of the 75SA better.

I do have the wooden waffle coming, but after testing this week , the stock wooden might just be the way to go.
