Got to the range, finally, yesterday for a short session
« on: February 02, 2024, 08:40:34 AM »
My wife and I went to the new range we joined (second trip).  We only shot a couple M&P 9MM micro compacts.

I shot my old Shield 1.0 and she shot her Equalizer.  The 1.0 now "wears" the 3.1" barrel/slide off the Shield Plus I put a 4" barrel/slide on awhile back.  The Shield Plus slide has a Holosun 407K  on it.  So does the Equalizer.  My wife is beginning to have some trouble racking the slide on her 1.0 Shield 9MM and the Equalizer should take care of that as it is one of the EZ style M&Ps with the internal hammer and lighter powered recoil spring assembly.

We shot some Federal 115 grain FMJ and Blazer 115 grain FMJ through both guns and I shot some of my 115 grain PD hollow points through my old Shield.

Purpose was to get her some more practice with the Equalizer and to see how it does with the Blazer ammo.  We found out it shoots the Federal 9MM FMJ better than the Blazer FMJ ammo.  I wanted to check the zero of the Holosun red dot Shield Plus slide on the older 1.0 Shield frame.  It was off low (about 2") and right (about 1").

My Shield/Shield Plus hybrid shoots the Federal 115 grain FMJ better than the Blazer 115 grain FMJ, too.  No need to buy more of the Blazer after these two boxes are gone.

The Equalizer with the Federal ammo at 5 yds.  10 shots.  That hole out in the black to the left is from her last few rounds on the targets to the left that got wild and crazy.  More on that in a bit.  The Federal ammo did pretty good with that small gun.

The Blazer ammo through the Equalizer.  Not bad, but not as good as the Federal.

I shot/sighted in the old Shield at 10 meters (thought it was set on yards but it was on meters, so it would 11 yds.)  First 3 rounds were low and right and I worked it up.  This was Blazer ammo, too.  Lost track of rounds as I can't get 10 rounds in the Shield mags. and had to swap mags at one point.  I was going to shoot some more of the Blazer ammo through it as I thought this one wasn't that bad for adjusting the  red dot while making these holes but didn't get around to it when I decided to stop early.

The Federal does pretty well in the Shield as well.  Another 10 meter group.

My wife was up next and somehow managed to string 20 shots across three targets and then told me she didn't understand how she managed to do that.  She wants the rounds in the little orange center and if she starts out "bad" on a target she'll move to another one rather than finish the magazine.  At that point I figured we'd just call it a day and head home.  We're both in our mid 60's and we really, really do need to work on our hand/arm strength and dry fire practice at home with the Mantis and that laser training system I bought her last year.  Neither one of us shoot like we know we used to and we need to work on ourselves first vs. just putting holes in paper.

Forgot to mention that she had no failures to fire due to that darn grip safety on the Equalizer.  She's learning to put her hand down, away from the beavertail in order to get that grip safety fully depressed.  I still need to try modifying the top end of the grip safety to make it stick out more so she can get that grip up where it should be and not have the problems from the grip safety not being fully depressed.  It's not an uncommon problem with the EZ models and the grip safeties.  I've seen others on the M&P Forum complain about it and say they refuse to carry one because of it.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

That's a good report.  I think!

I can't tell you how many times I wish I had 2 more clean targets to shoot at after a bad start on target 1.  I just want to erase the evidence without walking a 100 yards to put up a new one.

And I only resort to shooting steel at distance if I've had a GOOD day on paper.

I'm not saying I understand what causes a bad day vs. a good day, but I know some days I'm better off just putting stuff away and going home to clean the guns.  I've had a few days when even having a known great gun and ammo didn't help me shoot good groups.

At my age, I have about 1/3 of my range days aren't excellent.  The number of "bad" days goes down some if I shoot at least once per week consistently.  I am also easily distracted by other shooters at the public range nearby.  I am much more likely to have a good day when I am alone at the range, like in Ruidoso, early morning.  In other words, it is all mental for me.
