P-01 - Thoughts on firing pin retaining pin (CGW)
« on: February 16, 2024, 07:08:08 AM »
So when I first was doing research about my P-01 I read a lot of information on line regarding how doing a lot dry firing can damage the factory firing pin retaining pin. I do use snap-caps for dry fire practice and so far put about 1200 range rounds through it.

So I recently, and preemptively, purchased a couple of 61100 retaining pins from CGW as an upgrade. I went to swap in the new pin this morning and upon inspecting the factory pin, I came to the conclusion that it didn't need replacing at all. It was in great condition. But what struck me most was that the factory pin appears to be significantly more stout than the CGW pin. So I left the factory pin in and keeping the new ones as backup. Has anyone else come to the same conclusion about the factory pin? I thought the CGW pin would've be an upgrade...

What you can't see is the hardness, temper, and alloy of the new part.

Not all steel parts are alike.

Every now and then I’ll hold my CZ sideways up to a light. If I can see light looking thru the roll pin, hopefully, I’m good to go. I do have a few extra pins, just in case.

When my 2016 PCR had about 1000 rounds thru it, I checked the FPRP and it had a U-shaped crack. Never dry fired it. I can't remember but I think that factory FPRP was two roll pins, one inside the other, but I replaced it with a single 3mmx20mm roll pin by Midwest Fastener (Discussed here: https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=112160.msg872043#msg872043) and it's been holding up ever since.

My 2020 P-01 factory FPRP at around 1000 rounds was flawless. Go figure.

Not all steel parts are alike.

Of course - goes without saying unless you're 5 years old... ;D

Great tip!

How would we know it if CZ changed firing pin retaining pin design, specs. or suppliers?

We do know, from member posts here that sometimes the FPRP in their guns look well used/damaged when the pistol comes right out of the box.  Others report thousands of rounds with very little signs of use/damage.  Is it the FPRP?  The firing pin?  What else?

I brought this up as there's a discussion on the M&P forum about extractor pins.  Due to the statements made about different members pistols I got some of mine out and looked.  Some of my M&Ps have solid extractor pins and some have roll pins.  S&W doesn't announce when they make changes or why they make changes.

Wobbly mentioned, the other day, that there are times when an ammo maker will use a different powder in their loads when it's harder or more expensive to get the usual powder.  I wouldn't be surprised if some of the more standard parts (pins/springs) are also variable as the years go by and our CZ pistols are made.  Remember the trigger return spring breakage issues several years ago.

Our choices are shoot it (live or dry fire) till it breaks and then replace it with the pin of our choice.  Or every so many thousand rounds remove it and replace it with the pin of our choice.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Or you could buy one of the many quality clones that don’t have that silly FPRP. One less thing to fret over.  ;) ;D 8)
