is the PCR/Compact D a 'carry often, shoot seldom' gun?
« on: March 02, 2024, 04:19:08 PM »
Hello,

I want a thorough understanding of the differences in CZ handguns. This led me to the question in the subject line.

What I am wondering is if the aluminum frame is good for a daily range shooter [think 150-200 rounds a week of standard velocity 9mm, with 25-50 rounds of +p], or if it is something to carry often, but shoot sparingly.

I realize aluminum frames give good lifespans in the Beretta 92, Taurus PT92 and Sig P220/225/226/229 frames.

However, I noticed that the recoil spring guide rod 'shelf' in the CZ PCR is very thin-both height and depth.

I was wondering how they held up for regular use.

Full disclaimer- I have the PCR and an SP01 Tactical. I know the Tactical's steel frame is fine, but was wondering if the aluminum frame is just as durable in that area.

Thank you in advance.

My PCR has close to 3000 rounds downrange, probably 300 of which are Gold Dot 124 gr + P and I can’t see any signs of wear. I have a stock polymer guide rod and was considering a stainless steel one but given some concerns I have read about and the fact that its my favorite carry and shoot pistol I stuck with the polymer rod.  I know folks with alloy frame in both PCR & P01 who shoot more than me and report no failures.

Others with more experience than me will hopefully chime in.

My 2009 made PCR has north of 30,000 rounds fired now and it just gets better with age. I've also had a stainless steel guide rod in it since nearly day one. No issues. Shoot the gun and don't worry about it.

I’ve shot the heck out of my PCR with 115 and 124 gr. Ammo. When I want more I carry something chambered in 40 SW or 45acp or 10mm  O0

If the PCR is anything like the P-01 (which it absolutely is, both being aluminum framed CZ 75 compacts), the reliability and durability are non-issues. In its NATO trials, the P-01 was fired continuously for 15,000 rounds and only suffered an average of one malfunction every 2,800 rounds. So you’ve got nothing to worry about. CZ’s are not finicky “show boat” guns like the Rhombauer or whatever.

As others intimated, CZs are duty guns at heart. They can be tuned up and fancified, but they're tough, proven hard use guns.

Why would someone carry a gun that you can't shoot as much as you wanted/needed?
