The Scorpion Grip
« on: June 03, 2024, 09:54:12 AM »
Anyone know why the odd design for the Evo S1 was used?

After playing grip swap and 3 different grips (Pathfinder, SI, and Yetiwerks) I am pretty sure the SI is the easiest to use in terms of grip angle, storage, AND avoiding safety bite.  I believe you don't have to change the safety at all and use this grip.

The 3+ grip is decent, but seems a tad small, and you still feel the safety a little, but it is a vast improvement.

Just can't fathom the odd Evo S1 grip.

I let this issue go a long time ago. :) At the time my theory was planned marketing upgrades. We’ll sell it like this with “issues” for a few years then we’ll change it and the Americans will buy a new one! I played them: still have my S1! Never thought the faulty Gen 1 mags were included in this campaign. That was Just bad R&D.

CZ-UB is NOT oriented well to the American market, but they've gotten somewhat better over the years.

While the original Scorpion grip isn't terrible, it does put the shooting finger on either hand INTO the safety lever in an awkward way.  The grip is ALSO at a tremendously steep angle - especially for a sub gun with a shorter length usually accessed for assaults.  It just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

The Evo 3 is a collection of ergonomic niggles that need fixing right out of the box: bad trigger, bad hand guard, bad pistol grip, bad sights, bad charging handle, bad safety lever, etc. etc.etc. You’re almost better off spending the money and buying a decent MP5 from the get-go.

That said, having made my way through the Scorpion journey, I like the Strike Industries and the Gear Head Werks PGs - they’ve got the right angle and size, plus a beefed up tang reminiscent of the CZ75 beaver tail:

I hear ya.

But... an MP5 Clone is often almost three times the price.  Yes, you can spend less but its easy to spend more.  I think I saw a PTR K type on GB recently for $1K but it would need a ton of 'fixing' cuz it had no rail, etc.  Even the Turkish clones have now gone way north.  And if you want a good number of mags, get a second mortgage.

https://www.recoilweb.com/century-arms-ap5-the-turkish-mp5-is-back-167411.html

A NIB Scorpion can be had for $700 or less.  And it comes with all useful items - all it really needs is a trigger spring kit for peanuts and its a great weapon.  Decent grip, good mag release (yes I changed mine, but thats a preference), decent rail, and still a ton of stuff to add if you like.  And a brace is an easy thing to add to it.

And YES, the MP5 comes with a sweeter recoil and coolness, but still needs some upgrades

The Scorpion is nice because its a semi version of a real deal subgun, and the aftermarket jumped on it like a Glock, and it is easy to add stuff for not a ton of money - so you end up with a tailored weapon.

Thanks for the link to the GHW grip - looks great.  I just wish more folks made them in FDE.

I also consider a grip trap door to be highly useful.

The stock Scorpion grip doesn't bother me if configured as a long arm.

As a pistol, the grip sucks.

I agree to an extent.  Ironically, the Scorpion was designed with that grip as a subgun.  The biggest problem with the grip is that it makes your hand hurt from being in the fire position.  Maybe it is better in burst or FA, but in semi it is a real problem.

The problem is, I probably have $500 in aftermarket parts on each Scorpion to fix all the annoying ergonomic niggles it came with, and that’s not counting the aftermarket parts I didn’t like that are just sitting in boxed. Plus, all the time and effort of rustle all that stuff up counts for a lot. So, despite the low initial price, the Scorpion ain’t much of a bargain after you get it the way you want.

Strike Force EVO Grip with the overmolding is currently my favorite grip (XL size gloves if it matters). I've tried Yeti, Apex and Magpul before this. The factory MP5 grip angle is better, but not many grip options for them and much more difficult to change.

You’re looking at the issue from Your POV. To me it’s a great balance of price, performance and fun. All I needed was a spring kit, safety delete, paddle mags release and a grip to make it Great. So maybe $100. That’s not just my opinion but about fifty other shooters who have used it at the range. Several went out and bought their own. I’m not counting time and effort or extra parts; I just read reviews here and bought what worked. If I complain about the Scorpion it’s how much ammo it runs through!

Truth.  The aftermarket is amazing, but at the same time, you could do MINIMAL work on it and walk away with an affordable PCC or pistol with little changed.   And of course the new ones are pretty much GTG OTB.

Currently have the Magpul grip on mine; like the angle and the feel.  Wish it had storage in the grip; be nice to at least tuck a spare battery.
My complaint is for field stripping, the grip has to be shifted.  Keep an Allen key in the gun case, but it is a lot of monkey motion if you need a quick fieldstrip.
Are there any grips that allow a fieldstrip without moving it first?

I field strip without removal with the 3+, Strike Industries, Paske and Yetiwurks - all are fine with stripping.  I was alright with the regular grip also - but its too large and at a bad angle for the safety, etc.
