Considering the Royal .22
« on: August 08, 2024, 11:22:32 AM »
I have a CZ 452 Full Stock Mannlicher bought 20 years ago. It's the best and most accurate .22 I've shot in 56 years. It's also beautiful.

Now I want a bolt action CZ with a threaded barrel that's also an excellent shooter as well as beautiful.

I've not seen one in person but the Royal 16.5" seems to fit what I'm looking for. I'll be shooting some paper, rats, and plinking. No competition - just fun and the enjoyment of a lovely and effective rifle.

Is there anything special to know about the Royal good or bad?

Thanks.

I found one listed on Gunbroker and it was listed as having 1/2-20 threads not 1/2-28 I guess that's common in Europe. If you're wanting to suppress it check the threads.
I have a suppressor on backorder from silencer shop for a rimfire 22 and have just started to search for a rifle for it. I have a Marlin 1897 that is threaded for a Maxim and it's 1/2 20 , I understand that they make an adapter bushing to 1/2-28 but haven't started that search yet.

Sliencer Shop has the adapter - not cheap at $65.00 but on a $750.00 rifle it's insignificant. I already have a Sparrow suppressor that is excellent on my other .22s but I don't have a bolt action .22 with threaded barrel. And I want to try some subsonic ammo that would fail in semi-autos.

Someone pointed out that the Royal has an almost billboard branding on the side. On closer look, that's rather obnoxious.

That's like having a fine home made of cedar timbers with the name of the lumberyard in 8" letters burned into the wood.

Well, forget the Royal. That's all I would see everytime I picked it up.

I'll look elsewhere for a good shooting .22 with a threaded barrel and beautiful wood.

I'm disappointed that CZ thought this branding was appropriate.

My search has led me to a CZ 457 Varmit AT-ONE.. They don't seem to be plentiful on GunBroker but they are  interesting.  I have laminated stocks on 3 of my  Ruger 77s. I'd prefer walnut but I'd be OK with the laminated. I'm needing to refill the sock drawer funds before I get serious about looking for a new rifle. But need to keep looking.

Cz offered a 452 with a 16.5” threaded barrel in a wood stock. Early models had the euro standard thread. Later imports destined for US market had US standard. Might find a used one at an estate sale. Doubt any living owner is selling theirs.

Then you'll never want an Anschutz !

Well,  You could buy a Royal then 'stipple away'  the 'billboard' to like a grip-panel .   If you could see the stock b4 purchase,  It might have some Lottery wood ? ?

I like my Premier.  Considered the Royal and rejected it for the same reason you did.
