I learned a little more about how mental shooting a pistol at 100 yards really is today. We had a little wind, overcast sky, and so humid it was almost raining. But I needed some trigger time after the layoff due to a shoulder injury, so I planned to shoot 40 rounds or stop if my shoulder rebelled. I used the IMI ammo because I have a good stash of it, and it always shoots well in the P-10F.
For the first target, no changes to the gun or zero from the case, two 10 shot sequences. I expected the zero to be different due to ammo choice and range conditions. The first 10 were a little left and a little high, no surprise, when I checked the spotting scope. And I had a few wide shots which were cold shooter. But I didn't change anything on the gun just yet, instead I just loaded 10 more rounds and tried again.
This is where it gets interesting. The second 10 shots moved noticeably right and down AS IF I had changed the zero on the gun! I think I just mentally adjusted the hold point to favor a little lower and a little right but did it subconsciously. But I didn't realize it until I started editing the video. I'm thinking the second 10 shots would have overlapped the first 10 IF I had not checked the group location after the first 10 shots.
But, because I didn't understand what I had done, I made a big mistake. I changed the zero by two clicks right and two clicks down for target 2. Knowing that I had made a big correction, I went back to what I think was an unbiased mental center-of-bull hold. But the correction was too much and the target 2 shots hit generally right and lower than target 1, but not too low. I didn't look at the first 10 on target 2, instead I just loaded the second 10 rounds and shot them, with no mental bias this time, and, sure enough, the second 10 overlapped the first 10. After reviewing the targets and video, I'll probably go back one click left and leave the elevation alone if I make it to the range again before heading to the mountains of New Mexico for a few 200 yard sessions. Everything will change again there--wind, density altitude, lighting...and distance.
