cz 75 compact or glock 26?
« on: February 02, 2006, 05:18:36 PM »
Hello,
My name is Kurt and I am new to this forum, thanks for having me and sharing information. My son (24) and I are both interested in taking a ccw class and have been looking at compact pistols, there is the Glock 26 compact and the CZ 75 compact, I'm sure both are great handguns. I myself like the CZ 75 and my son who has very little firearm experience likes the Glock because of the weight issue, again I am sure they are both great pistols but with very little semi auto hand gun experience I'm not sure which of the two is really better. I tend to like the CZ because of the more traditional hammer and side safety (and steel) but realize it is heavier also. My son has checked around as have I and not many gun dealers stock the CZ and we were wondering about that also although none have said anything bad about it. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreceiated.
Thanks-
Kurt
PS. my son has decided on the glock 26 as there isn't much known about the CZ 75 at local dealers, can anyone give me the low down on the CZ?

CZ beats Glock hands down as far as trigger and ergonomics goes.  I never used the CZ compact so I can not attest to the compacts reliability, I do however own and carry a CZ-75 B full size model. I have never had any reliability issues with my CZ-75Bs, 20,000 rounds + and counting. Personally I have never worried about the weight, to me a pound or two is nothing, now carrying a FN FAL with a basic 200 round load all day, that could get tiring.  If you are worried about weight I would suggest you also look into the Springfield Armory XD series. The XDs are also excellent guns, with much better ergonomics and triggers then a Glock will ever have, and I carry them on occasion also.  Hope this helps.

the XD's are not as good as glock, thats just what glock haters spew... it says something when over 64% of the american law enforcement community choose and use glock firearms over any other pistol! so enough of the glock bashing, because its rediculous and futile. as for the CZ, i am really wanting to get one because they have a good feel to them... for everyday carry i would go with the G26, thats what i have on my hip now. i would never part ways with the 26. but i am thinking about getting a CZ here soon... i say get the G26 and the CZ together!!! lol

What 64% of the law enforcement community chose has NOTHING to do with the innate qualities of the guns chosen.

Probably 90% of the LEOs use Ford Crown Vics, too.  Is that a reason to buy a Ford Crown Vic for your family?

Glock made BIG price concessions to the LEO community, bought back their existing guns at good prices, and did a marketing blitz on the LEOs.  And the folks making the decisions weren't the ones carrying them -- it was the numbers crunchers.

Glock is a very smart firm and I take my hat off to them. Glocks are good guns, but the fact that government agencies picked them doesn't make them better.  (I'll remind you that the US Govt. picked Beretta 92s for our military, and they're slowing moving away from them -- finding that in real combat, they're not as good as they had hoped.)

If someone can try the guns in question, and shoots the G26 better, he or she would be foolish to buy anything else.   But the important thing is to try the guns yourself, and not buy based on hearsay or the praise of others, alone.

Howdy folks,

+1 With Mr. Walt. My agency firearms unit did extensive testing of the various makes and models when it was time to replace our 10 year old carry pistols. They selected Sigs. Sadly a beancounter in DC over rode their knowledge and hard work, and bought Glocks - because they were cheaper.

Far too many LEAs are armed with Glocks in my opinion, not because they are fabulous weapons or because the troops want them. They are handed a Glock because the bean counters love the low LE price they can get them for. Already after 4 short years (but long to us troops), my agency is already beginning to phase out the issued Glocks with another brand - Sigs, amazing isn't it?

It is not Glock bashing to state a fair observation. Glocks have simply never fit my hand well, so why do I want to risk my life to something I do not feel comfortable shooting? Plain and simple to me - if it does not fit my hand well, I am not going to shoot it well. After all it is my life I am concerned about, not some bean counter earning a cash award because he saved my agency X number of dollars on weapons purchased.

As Mr. Walt also suggested, as a 37 year LE firearms instructor, this is what I tell folks when they ask me "what gun should I buy for self-defense?". My answer is always the same. Go to a gun store with a wide assortment and handle everything that appears to fit you list of needs. Then note the ones that feel the best in your hands. Can you work all of the controls comfortably?. Does it point naturally for you? Once they have narrowed their list down to x number of pistols, I then suggest they shoot every weapon on their list to see first hand which one appears to work the best for them.

What pistol works the best for me, does not mean it will work the best for the next person handling it. So to me, shooting it is the best way to make your decision sir. Find a range that has rental pistols that are on your final list. If you can't find a range with rental pistols, then ask around. Maybe you have a friend who owns the weapon you want to shoot, or they have a friend who does. To me, you shooting your list of weapons is the best way for you to decide what gun you want to trust your life too. I would also suggest your son join you, as he may be suprised with a different weapon working better for him. Or he may confirm the Glock 26 is the pistol for him. But again, there is only one way for both of you to make that choice in my view sir.

But all that said, if you are asking for my personal opinion, I would pick the CZ over the Glock 26 everyday and twice on Sundays, lol. I am an old dinosaur, who simply prefers the full sized models on steel frames. I have never found it substantially harder to conceal a full size over a compact. I get a longer sighting radius and a bit better ballistics from the longer barrel too. Just another thought to throw out for your consideration sir. Don't over look a possible carry gun just because it might be larger than what some "experts" feel should be considered. I am a lot of things, especially as I get older. But an expert is never going to be one of them, lol.

Good luck. Remember lighter may be easier to carry. But when you are shooting it, you will feel the recoil more as well. I simply control the steel framed pistols much better, getting tighter groups in faster time frames. So I am more accurate and quicker with the full size, steel pistols. I personally have no desire to give up those positives for something a bit lighter. I bought it to defend myself with, and not simply for it ease of carry. But that said, I have been concealing full sized, steel framed pistols for 37 years, and that is simply not an issue for me at all.

EZRIDE926,

Good question, thanks for asking. I tried both frames and did not like the Glock for various reasons. (could be I own four and 1/2 CZ's).

Another option for you or your son (Who seemed more weight concerned) is the CZ75D PCR. It is an alloy frame version of the compact. Much lighter, very similar shape and features (or identical). I have one with the decocker and love it. Light, great ergonomics, 10 rounds in 1" group at 10' off-hand accuracy.

Another option is the CZ P-01. Very Glock-like square front with light rail. Also a great shooter. I have the P-06 which is the .40 S&W variation.

BTW the 1/2 CZ I mentioned is another reason to go CZ. The Kadet .22lr adapter can be added to most CZ frames and shooting cost and round availability is greatly improved. Shoot all day for the cost of a box of 9mm.

Good Shooting!

Try the CZ 2075 Rami in the 9mm (better than the glock 26 and smaller) or the .40 version (better than the glock 27 and smaller)

I have held both the Glock 26 and 27 and the CZ 2075 Rami and I like the Rami better.

try one out.

I would agree the RAMI would be a better comparison to the 26 or 27.
I worked a rental range some time ago, and fired almost every variety of Glock, plus I qualify with the 17 every year with my Dept, Expert or Dostonguished Expert, and I can't stand 'em. Don't fit me worth beans. The CZ grip fits me to a T.
I agree, try before you buy, find a rental range, handle the rentals, try the ones that seem like an extension of your arm, put back the ones that feel like a brick.
BTW, we went to Glock soley due to price, and I have had 300% more Glocks fail in my hand at work than CZs ever.  ;D Of course, your mileage may vary. ;)
