where's the CZ 75 semi compact?
« on: February 17, 2002, 10:32:58 PM »
Now that I am sold on the CZ 75, I have a few more questions.

1. I would like to find the semi compact model.  I recall seeing it a year or two ago, but it is not to be found anywhere locally.  CZ Connection did not know what I was talking about when I asked about it.  CZ still makes it: www.czub.cz/PISTOLa.HTM... can anyone offer any leads on finding the semi compact?

2. Next, if anyone in the forum owns one, how does it perform in terms of recoil/barrel rise, etc.  The slightly shorter barrel might make a difference as discussed in the review of the new compact.

3. On a recent trip to the local gunstore, they had a two tone blue/bronze (chrome?) CZ 75 which was very sharp.  However, folks here have heavily endorsed the nickel finish as being the most duarable.  What can you all tell me about that bronze colored finish on the two tone above?

I own a S&W 915 and would very much like to upgrade to a better performing 9mm.  One of my former ('s was a TA 90 clone of the CZ75.  It had some redeeming features such as excellent recoil compared to my S&W 915.  I could go on about how much the S&W is a disappointment- great machining, finish, but lousy recoil.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

The nickel finish on the CZ-75's has a nice warm yellowish tint, so the one you saw was the duo-tone nickel and polymer. It is a very good looking combination.

Why are you interested in the semi-compact instead of the more "common" CZ's? The full-sized CZ's are going to be a lot more mild recoiling than the compacts. My compact PCR has  recoil (subjectively) equivalent to full sized guns like some Glocks, Ruger and Sigs I've tried. The CZ-75SA is a really mild recoiling gun compared to all of the above.

Look closely at how comfortable the grip is for you - when I shot the CZ-75's in the past with clunky grips, the recoil was subjectively more distracting. But with thinner grip panels and a surer grip, the CZ-75's recoil seemed almost irrelevant.

Hey Sara....great questions.  My compact recoils alot less than my smith 9mm.  Weight has everything to do with it..
The S/Compact is a rare bird...CZUSA will have to confirm this but I dont believe they are importing them at all...not enough market.  I have heard of them here..but havent ever seen one.  I wouldnt worry about recoil with it or the steel framed Compact..mine weighs 2 lbs empty and with a full Hi Cap it weighs enough to curb recoil to a nice dull roar even shooting
+P+ ammo.  My 3953 bucks like a bronco compared to my compact....8 oz of weight will do it.  When I have words about the S/Compact..I will let you know.
Shoot well

I appreciate the feedback thus far.  Why do would I prefer an s/compact?  1911's have a shorter Commander, S&W has short barrels, etc, which appeal to persons who seek a more manual, smaller package.  The full size CZ is already a natural shooter (like the Hi Power), such that you can't even feel the 1kilo of weight.  Picture an even more manual short barrel + full size grip for control, and you've got something special.  Help me out UT, doesn't the compact enhance your target acquisition?  Thank you.

I would have to agree....quicker acquisition, better point shooting and more natural feeling balance IMO :)

Also, if you have not tried the compact, try it. I do not think that the CZ compact's grip is "as short" as some other model's compacts. I have rather large hands, and I find the 75b compact fits my hand perfectly with the mag installed. I keep thinking I want to get a fullsize someday, but really can't justify it. I like my compact so much, and have no problems with recoil.

The semi-compact is basically the 75 Compact/PCR slide on a full-size frame.  I loaned out my "Encyclopedia of Pistols and Revolvers," but I think that the dimensions are as I just described.  The grip MAY not be a long as the full-size 75/85, but it IS longer than the 75 Compact/PCR, as hi-caps fit flush in the semi-compact.  CZ-USA stopped importing the semi-compact because the magazine ban pretty much killed its marketing niche.  I would like to own one, personally.

Actually that is a very very nice feeling combination.  If you want to see if they are available in the US call the CZ distributer CZ USA.  They are very nice and helpful and the phone call is cheap plus you know for sure.

I had two CZ 75's for a while one a full size nickel one (so beautiful) and one the PCR I still have.  I tried switching the top ends and shot both combinations, the short barell and full size grip and the full size barell and short grip.

I have to admit the "commander" style full size grip and short slide really felt comfortable in the hand.  I was surprise as I had always though if you wanted to make anything shorter it should be the grip but the balance of the short barell and full grip is really pleasing.  I personally thought it looked a little goofy but It felt good and shot just as good a the full size gun.

Here is  a link to a picture of it

Shiro...

Was it a simple change of barrel/slide/etc., or did you have to do any gunsmithing to make it work (other than the beautiful finish and customization on the pistol)?

I understand from CZ that the slides are not designed to be interchanged for reasons of close tolerances and accompanying accuracy; it is more a matter of great luck when they do...?

By the way, great photos!!   8)

Hi OG2,

I was just making a little joke calling it a custom.  All I did was switch the top ends.  Takes 15 seconds.   The finishes are stock too.  The bottom end is from a factory electoless nickle plated 75b and the top a polymer coated PCR compact.

Looks kinda custom though doesn't it?

The hybrids seemed to shoot and function fine.  I shot both combinations.
