A question on decocking...
« on: June 30, 2003, 05:36:11 AM »
When decocking a CZ75 Compact for a Double Action 1st pull, (like when shooting production or carrying in DA mode), Do you decock it to the half-cock position or do you fully decock it? (just like when the hammer was not cocked in the 1st place) I hope my questions are clear enough! :D

There is FAQ here: pub105.ezboard.com/fczech...D=92.topic

In short: Decock fully down, not on -cock position

Just what you need, conflicting answers!

Paraphrasing a quote from someone asking the gunsmith at CZ-USA:

The hammer on a decocking 75B (P-01, PCR) has half of the half cock notch safety because the other half was ground away for the decocking mechanism. There is no problem lowering to the half cocked notch on a non decocking 75B.

Not only is it safe, it lessens the trigger length of the DA.

To decock safely:

- Keep your finger off the trigger.
- Point the gun in a safe direction.
- Put your non firing hand thumb between the hammer and slide.
- Press the trigger fully to release the hammer.
- Release the trigger thereby engaging the firing pin block.
- Slowly roll your thumb out from between the hammer and slide.

Practice decocking with an empty gun until you have mastered and are satisfied with the procedure.

If you want to fully decock, follow the above procedure but keep the trigger fully pressed until your thumb has rolled out and let the hammer fully down.

What CZTOPS said.

There is no reason NOT to decock fully.

But there is also no reason not to drop the hammer to half-cock, either -- and ,as CZTOPS said, from half-cock position you start with a shorter, lighter trigger on the next shot.

Note: the decocker models drop the hammer to half-cock.  That is considered safe.  The decock models have a less robust sear than the non-decock models.

Do whatever makes you comfortable -- but practice, and do it safely.

Will the firing pin block still engage when the hammer is on the half cock position? Is decocking to the half cock position legal for IPSC Production division?

As you pull the trigger you raise a plunger in the slide that unblocks the firing pin.  It only works if the trigger is pulled....

Hammer position has no effect on the firing pin block.

(Don't know about IPSC; it is legal in IDPA, depending upon which Board of Director you ask...)
