HorseSh** Leather for CZ97b
« on: April 06, 2003, 06:50:27 PM »
Received a model 28 holster from HS Leather for the 97b...my impressions are as follows.  This holster is in my opinion way too small.  Oh, the gun fits into it all right, or should I say a small piece of the muzzle does.  This leaves the upper half of the gun hanging free in the air and there is no way it is going to "tuck neatly into my side" with this design.  The leather itself, if the holster is indeed made of leather, is absolutely rigid, showing almost no give in any direction.  No chance this model will close up on you once the gun is drawn.  It is as stiff as Kydex, and quite rough on the inside to boot. I would say the leather has been saturated with some kind of glue or resin and I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it to "mold in" to the gun or to my hip.  My primary gripe is that 75% of the weight of this large, heavy semi-auto is left unsupported above the leather, above the belt line.  I suppose the maker rationalizes this design by thinking that customers expect the muzzle to be at belt level on their concealment holsters.  NOT!   The weird "FBI style" cant forces placment of the holster behind the side seam.  Well, you get the picture.  This model makes the Dillon Master look very good.  That's my story.  Anyone care to try this one out?

How about sharing a front and back picture, with the gun inserted?

Better yet, give me a UPS address and I'll send it to you.  That way we'll have a second opinion.  (sorry I don't have a digital camera).

Actually, you should send it back and get your money back.  Just thought others would like to see what you were talking about...

I sent this holster to JR, so I'm hoping he'll have a moment to add his comments.  I've contacted Blade-Tech, and they have stated they have a mold for the 97b.  So I have one on order and will report back when I receive it.  Also have asked Greg Kramer if a 97b holster is a  possibility but haven't heard back yet.

Have you thought about just getting one of the High Noon holsters designed for the -97B?  I have a couple of High Noon rigs, and they are absolutely top rate.

Yes, I checked out the High Noon website and discovered that their claim to fame is extremely high carry rigs.  This is NOT what is required for the 97b.  The only really good concealed carry method is a shoulder holster.   Second best is a good strong side belt holster.   In my opinion it has to be FBI cant, otherwise the 97b's copious grip is going to stick out prominently.  The main objective in the design of such a holster is to allow a person to move about without a lot of wobbling and top-heaviness on the part of the firearm.  Kramer Leather is interested and I'll be dropping my 97 off for them to make a mold...developing.  Everything else I own has a Kramer holster that works like a champ.  I can't say enough about them.

My experience with High Noon Holsters has been great. I admit that I don't own a 97B, so I haven't carried one. But I do own a very heavy Satin Nickel 75B in 40 S&W, which has a fuller front frame and slide area.

That and my BD both are carried in High Noon holsters, with no top-heavy feel. There is an outstanding FBI cant, which conceals the butt very well. The holster does ride a little high, just the way I like it, but not excessively. The pancake style makes for a really tight fit to the body, without any discomfort. I had never even considered carrying the large 75's concealed at all until I tried the guns with the High Noon holster. Now they are what I carry most.

The High Noon holster is worth a second look.

Finally have a chance to comment here. I used the holster for some practice this weekend. First the belt loops are TIGHT for 1.5" belt. My Wilderness combat model was a bitch to get pulled through especially when feeding through a belt loop in the middle of the holster. However I think that tightness helped to keep the gun a bit more stable than it would have been without it. The gun does ride high, and I tried to show with the white lines the approx location of the belt along the holster. The sweat shield is just huge, and I can't seem to figure out why. You can see it in the photo. The leather is moulded very well around the pistol, and this leather is THICK. Like Lazarus said, it's so rigid, you'd think it was plastic. That being said, fit and retention were perfect FOR ME.  Not sure that I'd want to use this holster for competition since it does hold the gun a bit tight, but very nice for carry. I also doubt it will work in anytime soon considering the rigidity of the hoslter.

I also agree with Lazarus in that if Dillon made their master for the 97b with this leather and quality, it would be a great holster.

I know the picture sucks, but at least it's a picture.

Off topic- What mag extension is that, and how many rounds can you get in the mag now?

The mag base pad is made by "CPMI" sold on Brownells.com part number 153-503-100.  I also carry them, and they sell for $13 each shipped. They still only hold 10 rounds. If you push real hard, you can get the 11th in, but there is no way you are getting it into the gun. Well, maybe at least without a sledge :eek

Take a look Fist Holsters (www.fist-inc.com)- specifically the #15 Superslide.  I had one made for my 97B and it's perfect.  You can carry it all day long with no strain and you almost forget that you have it on.

It's made of heavy harness leather that will not lose its shape.

I'm extremely pleased with it.
