mag rattle
« on: February 13, 2009, 06:23:09 PM »
so i have owned my sp-01 for quite a while now, a couple years, and i have noticed a problem with my magazine even from when i bought it.  i never really cared until recently i have been thinking about carrying it bc i love it so much.
when i have 18 rounds in my magazine, or sometimes even 19, there is a rattling sound in the magazine.  now if there is only 17 or 16 rounds there is no rattle.  the magazine works great and i have had zero issues, but the rattling is obnoxious and also sounds like i am wearing a cat's bell on my belt when i am carrying it.

any idea what that is? how can i fix it?  thanks in advance!

Try putting a peice of electrical tape on the little metal plate at the bottom of the spring, that worked for the mags in my 75. If you really want to carry and that does not work, try to talk yourself into a 15/16 round carry? Good luck, John

i will definitely try that out thanks.  i was thinking of going to those new flush fit mecgar 17 round mags. bc if it takes me 17 shots to end a threat i need to be at the range a heck of a lot more...

any other ideas out there in case the tape doesn't work?

I haven't shot my new Sp-01 that much but I have noticed the mag rattle too. I've tried loading the mags manually as well as with my upLula mag loader with no difference. I have the 19 load mags but have never been able to get more than 18 in them. I tried some electrical tape (as suggested) at the metal part hooked on to the bottom of the spring with no improvement. I played with the mags quite a bit and it is possible to move the bottom metal spring attachment and install the spring (possibly) in the wrong position.  With the plate attached this way I was only able to get 17 cartridges in it but it didn't rattle - don't know if the gun will shoot properly though. I am almost certain that the rattling is cartridges in the magazine in the stack part and is due to a cartridge above the rattling ones not sitting at the proper angle - i.e. sitting horizontally instead of an upward angle at the right spot just before the single feed (neck).  I can remove a cartridge and the rattle stops. Add it back and it rattles some where down in the middle of the stack. Tap the bottom of the mag on a hard surface as you load it sometimes helps and back and forth in your hands helps too on occasion. It never rattles with just 16 so just put 16 in it or get the 16 round mags. I think the rattle is inherent due to the large capacity of the magazine. I don't know what it is, but I love my CZ Sp-01.

i recently also noticed that my mags rattle with 18 rounds.
After giving it some thought I came up with the theory that maybe, the magazine folllower, with 18 cartridges in the mag, does not have enough 'angle-play' to cope with the increasingly upward angle of the bullet row, due to the slightly conical shape of the parabellum.

It's just a wild guess, and I dont have enough experience with other brands of mags unfortunately to check if the cz follower is tighter or longer then others.

If this could be the cause, slightly adjusting the follower to give more play could be the sollution.
Maybe bending the bottom of the follower a bit inwards, or shortening the height?
