Starting to see a real pattern? Or just ignore it???
« on: March 18, 2009, 10:37:16 AM »
Washington Times

After the September 11 attacks, commercial airline pilots were allowed to carry guns if they completed a federal-safety program. No longer would unarmed pilots be defenseless as remorseless hijackers seized control of aircraft and rammed them into buildings.

Now President Obama is quietly ending the federal firearms program, risking public safety on airlines in the name of an anti-gun ideology.

The Obama administration this past week diverted some $2 million from the pilot training program to hire more supervisory staff, who will engage in field inspections of pilots.

This looks like completely unnecessary harassment of the pilots. The 12,000 Federal Flight Deck Officers, the pilots who have been approved to carry guns, are reported to have the best behavior of any federal law enforcement agency. There are no cases where any of them has improperly brandished or used a gun. There are just a few cases where officers have improperly used their IDs.

Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe the pilots should be armed.  I just take exception to the part of the article I quoted only because it's wrong.  I remember this vividly because I was flying out of Charlotte a few days after it happened.

The article did not mention AD or NDs which this apparently was and is a separate issue from Using or Brandishing.

Howdy folks,

From what I understand, a study was conducted after that situation, and it was determined that the issued holster the pilots were required to use was a poor design.  It was shown to cause this issue during testing done after this event.

I did not read the article, but if this is the situation in Charlotte that I am referring to, the holster was later determined to be the cause.

Just wanted to clarify that for folks.

The article did not mention that the pilot was required to remove the gun from the safety of its holster and place a lock on it. If the pilot had been allowed to keep his gun in its holster this incident would not have happened.

I think that I heard on "GUN TALK" with Tom Gresham that commercial pilots were required to carry a firearm until 1963 and New Your City schools had shooting clubs until 1966 were kids brought their guns to school. What a change in society since the Supreme Court took God out of school.

I wasn't aware the Flight Deck Officer program had been ended, stupid move, made our country less safe.
