Which SP-01 should I get?
« on: May 07, 2009, 08:53:54 AM »
Just started considering this gun yesterday after holding one at a local sporting goods store.  I was in such a rush, I didn't look at it thoroughly but will go back today.

I don't care if it's 9mm or 40 S & W, want the best SA trigger I can get and would like the best stock sights.  The price was $699 and I'm almost sure it did not have the sights of a Standard.

Thanks for the input...

It would help if we knew what you were going to use the gun for.  If USPSA then the SP-01 Shadow would be my first choice.  Better trigger &  better sights for playing USPSA and with some weight reduction better for IDPA SSP Division.  9MM would be the calibre I would choose.  Ammunition is less expensive and for USPSA you have higher mag capacity.

For self defense and carry I would choose another model in the CZ line.

thanks for the info....I won't be shooting any competition with this gun, but I do think the Shadow is what I want.  The gun I saw is a Tactical 40 S&W and not the one I would choose, though not because of the calibre.  I reload everything I shoot, so ammo availablity matters not, though component availablity certainly does.  I've been grabbing all the 40's I could get at the range, so I have that part of the formula.  I have appropriate powder.  Bullets are a shopping cart, CC and delivery away.  Holdup would only be primers, which seem to be a bit harder to find at the moment.

Reflex .... if you want it for accurate shooting, I would go with the 45.  A lot of owners don't realize that a .40 has more recoil than a .45 ... thus making it a little tougher to stay on your target (range).  The .40 is geared more for police depts.
Although the 9mm ammo is a lot cheaper than .40 or .45 ...... I've been there.  I currently have a CZ 75D 9mm compact .... mainly for carry.  Any CZ you choose will be great.

Shadow is the best SP01 variant hands down.

others can be made nice, but if looking for out of the box, good to go gun..the Shadow is it.

SP-01 Phantom

Pluses for Phantom:
1. light weight
2. grippy grip texture and superb grip feel, does not shift in the hand between shots
3. thinner grip sides, great for small or medium hands
4. two interchangeable back straps
5. low recoil (energy absorbed by polymer)
6. Kadet Kit fits with PCR slide stop (or the supplied slide stop on newer kits)
7. very accurate after sear job and break in
8. very reliable
9. uses standard capacity CZ75 mags (I exchange the flat metal base plate for a rubber P-01 base) and higher capacity SP-01 mags (with extended polymer base)

Minuses for Phantom:
1. creepy, cammy, single-action trigger.  I performed an "in situ" sear hone that worked
2. extra friction on slide stop (needed break in for sling shot slide release)
3. trigger can pinch finger (I added a frame mounted trigger stop that helped)
4. frame rails are two sets of metal inserts in the polymer frame, so different complete tear down
5. non-reciprocating part of Kadet Kit upper not supported by front of Phantom frame (dust cover) and the Kit can see saw slightly with the slide stop shaft as the fulcrum.  Still accurate and reliable with the Kit, but not confidence inspiring
6. similar polymer technology as the P-07, but the Phantom costs considerably more
7. too big for IWB carry

In all, my Phantom needed some attention and tuning, but it was worth it.  The grip is the best of all the CZ-75's and with its light weight it handles extremely well.  For a "big" high capacity gun, it does not feel big in the hand.  Althoug the Kadet Kit shoots reliably and accurately on the Phantom, I mainly use my Kadet Kit on my P-01, which supports the Kit better.

I really wish CZ would ship their guns with decent sear angles.  It would save me a lot of aggravation.  I would probably collect more CZ's if they had half decent stock triggers.

You might want to take a look at the SP01 Tactical I am selling.

I'm happy with my SP-01 Tactical, still breaking it in. I don't reload so my range time has been drastically cut down. I had a Sp-01 before that I had to sell for monetary reasons. But as soon as I had the cash I bought another one. For CCW I use my P-01. They are both great guns.
