CZ SP-01 or Phantom for competition?
« on: May 16, 2009, 11:43:52 PM »
I've recently put some $ down on a SP-01 and plan to start shooting competitions once I get it. I don't know if I'll be involved with the USPSA or IDPA yet but, after doing some research I've noticed there's a lot of people that prefer the Phantom over the SP-01. Which gun would be better for competition? I've been told the SP-01 because of the extra weight from the dealer but, I know you guys on the forum are the real experts when it comes to CZ's. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated as I can go switch out for the Phantom if I want.

I've been lurking here for few weeks, but have not seen any comments as to "People's preference for Phantom for competition" which you refer to.  I've read just the opposite, which is preference for regular steel sp01 for better recoil control due to added weight.

Sorry to not provide any assistance for your question, but I'm curious as to your source for "People's preference for Phantom for competition".  Do you have an URL or reference to a source that I can look at ?

Only reason I can think of for preferring Phantom would be 1) Possibly better fit on a grip, given smaller grip and removable back strap.  2) Weight restriction issue with SSP in IDPA.   I'm willing to bet that given that most people like the grip on CZ and weight can be reduced on SP01 just by a grip panel change, that most would prefer to go with regular SP01, tactical, or shadow, rather than Phantom.

Any way, I'm curious to know more about this as I'll be buying one of the cz for multiple use gun, which will include IDPA.

You know what, I got the Shadow and Phantom mixed up. It's the Shadow that I read people prefer which if I'm not mistaken this time is the custom SP-01 which is all metal. No wonder I was confused because I was also told the heavier weight with the SP-01 is better for recoil purposes. Thanks for questioning me on that and making me go look for the info to post a link. My bad. So, I would imagine the answer to my question is obvious at this point.

the steel gun will be better for competition..its just that much easier to shoot, even with loaded down 9mm.
Either the Shadow or a lightly worked over std SP01 is the way to go.

Do you know if the SP-01 is legal to shoot in the USPSA and IDPA? Also, do you happen to know what division I would shoot it in. I'm new to shooting competitively  and will be looking to join one of the groups in a few months. From what I understand there's a match going on almost every weekend in the central FL area somewhere.

Thanks for the info

SP01 Shadow and a lightly modified ( within the rules ) SP01 are legal for USPSA Production division. You could also shoot them in any of the other divisions ( Limited 10, Limited and Open) but it is best in Production. For IDPA it needs a little weight reduction, but there are several threads on that here in the forum.

FL, like AZ is a great place to shoot. Lots of matches

From what I've read, the Shadow has one of the better triggers in the CZ line right out of the box.
