New SP-01 Tactical owner; mini range report
« on: June 17, 2009, 03:14:58 PM »
First off, hi everyone, thanks for the great forum and all the great info.  I've been lurking here for a while, and finally decided to take the plunge and get an SP-01.  After handling a few examples in shops, I decided to get the gun with competition hammer and slicked-up action from Ghost Products.  I also had them put in the stainless drop free mag brake, and stainless guide rod.  And a third mag.
They surprised me by unexpectedly shipping the gun way earlier than promised, which was almost a nice surprise, but also almost a SNAFU as I barely had time to pay down my CC to avoid major overlimit fees!  Uh, all's well that ends well, I guess.
Got the gun and broke it down, cleaned the liberal coating of oil off, re-lubed lightly, and headed to the range.
Now, I should say that this gun is going to be my bedside and car gun, range piece, and SHTF sidearm.  As such, I wanted a rail, (for TLR-2) total reliability, and good accuracy.  This CZ is replacing a Sig 226 that, while reliable, has never been accurate enough for me to be really comfortable with.
First shot at 10 yards was a bull.  Nice!  I proceeded to shoot the best pistol group of my life, putting all 19 rounds into 8" standing, offhand, clustered evenly around POA.  Yeah, I know that's not the world's greatest grouping, but I'm not the world's greatest shot, either...   ;)  Point being, the gun is more accurate than I am, shoots to POA, and that trigger is _sweet_.  No creep, perfect break, and just enough weight to be light but not scary at 3lb, 11oz.  DA is a smooth 8lb, 1oz, which is just fine for my purposes.
Shot 250 rounds of WWB, and not one malfunction of any kind.  Didn't try any carry ammo, as I can't buy any right now so I'm hoarding what I've got.  Moved out to 25 yards, and my groups opened up, but were still adequate to hit a torso at well beyond "self-defense" range.
At the end of the day, I went back to 10 yards, and put 13 rounds into 4", in a nice group centered on the bullseye of a shoot'n'see.  Happy?  Yeah!
Not being able to leave well enough alone, I got out the 400 grit and Dremel and polished up the feed ramp, chamber, and underside of the slide a bit.  Gilding the lily in this case, but I've been trained by my Kel-Tecs to fluff 'n buff all new guns, and a polish can't hurt.
I'll be getting my TLR-2 today, supposedly, and I'll post further as I have more to say.  Hopefully my shooting will improve now that I have something accurate to shoot with, too!  For now, I think I made a great choice and got a great gun.
Cheers,
apophasis

You made a good choice in getting the SP-01 Tactical. I own the same pistol and use it as my nightstand pistol. Glad you to see how well you did on your first trip to the range (with SP-01). Next you need a P-01 as a CCW. Good shooting.

Once you get used to it it should group under 3" offhand ar 25 yards.  Mine does. I do not have the tactical as I prefer thumb safety and condition one carry. The one I have with a SA only trigger will group 0.6" offhand at 7 yards and stay under 2" at 25 if I do the job right and am in the groove.
