new SHADOW...a qwik question or 2
« on: June 26, 2009, 03:50:08 PM »
just got my very first CZ yesterday. took my SHADOW out today to try to get a little break-in done and put about 100 rds of 115's and 125's. it was ONLY in the 90's and extra humid,so 100 rds was it. slathered that baby up with breakfree and it got hot. anyway, one FTE jammed it up,but that was it. i guess i just don't understand this SA/DA action, being mostly a revo/1911/glock shooter. anyway,SA felt pretty good, but can much be done with all of that take-up and spongy feel? seems like there is a lot of questions about spring weights. what are the factory recoil and mainspring wts? it came with an add'l mainspring, same or different that what is in it? how come the barrel looked like war surplus when i took it apart (before i took it out for to break it in). recoil springwise i'm going to be around 127pf(121@1050).
thanks for your input. jon

Quick answers:

Add'l mainspring is the same as what is installed....18 lb if I recall correctly.

You get used to the DA/SA transition as well as the SA take-up.  The Da and Sa triggers can be improved quite a bit with a little work.

For your loads, use whatever recoil spring you like that works and feels ok to you...probably in the 10 - 14 lb range.

The barrel comes with a corrosion resistant coating that makes it look dull, gray, and spotty.  Works fine but can be polished up if you want it shiny.

According to what I read here and there, that uneven barrel finish is the result of a manufacturing process called 'carburising'. Basically, the hot forged barrel steel is dusted with fine carbon powder, which hardens the barrel's surface. This reduces barrel wear - don't know about the bushing though.

Your observation is correct as I understand this is a common process for military small arms. The CZ-UB factory is a long-time supplier to East-block military forces, and now it sells its wares in the West. Not the greatest cosmetics, but it seems like the performance is all there.

thanks for comments. so why would they ship the gun with another/extra main spring. didn't know they went bad? maybe an extra recoil spring, but not a main spring. so,i assume 18lbs. is the stock MS wt? so,can you buy a 15-16lb? still don't know for sure the recoil spring wt. just trying to eliminate buying a bunch of springs i don't need, not to mention they have to be ORDERED,not just picked down the street. that is a strange deal on the barrels. it does not look any different after i shot a 100 rds thru than it did when new. it looks like someone threw a handful of sand in the slide and took it out and ran it hard. scratched and scraped barrel hood and the barrel channel in the side. kinda ugly, but no harm,no foul,i guess. so,would a 11-12lb recoil spring be close for my 127pf with somewhat fast burning powder. will the somewhat newer Mec-Gar 17rd afc mags work ok in the SHADOW? thanks again.

I use a 13lb main spring and an 11lb recoil spring in my shadow with 128pf, 124grain CMJ bullet @ 1035fps, using 4.3grains of N320.

thanks. i going to try a 12lb recoil spring and a 16lb main/hammer spring. should work out o.k. i would think. i've used that very same vv N320 load alot and it is generally very good. i switched over to vv N330 recently because i had more of it. did get to run another 60-70 rds thru it. had some bullets seat a little to long,so i did have some problems.
