I've been reading through this forum to get some ideas on the SP01 but all I read about is Shadow-this, Tactical-that. What's up with this?? I think this forum needs more representation from SP01 owners.

So...

I purchased one to sway the balance towards the SP01 ... at least by one  ;D

Would have loved to purchased the Shadow, but CA DOJ deems this pistol to be unsafe as the manufacturer is not willing to submit this pistol for testing and pay the fees. Tactical wasn't a consideration since I prefer a manual safety over a decocker. So the choice was really made for me! I think I'll be a happy camper with the SP01, can't wait to get it!

I can say without a shadow of a doubt that you will be very happy with your SP01.   ;)

Great to hear about another SP-01 owner!!!

I love mine, after test firing many other brands and models at the range I decided on the SP-01 for how it fit my hand and do to the weight my double taps were better and quicker.

Just keep in mind, as I said in another post, the SP-01 comes with a heavy, about 16# to 18#, slide return spring that can cause some failures. You might want to look for a spring about 11# for plinking ammo and I've found that the 14# spring is good for +P, at least in my gun.

Please post a follow up when you have a few hundred rounds down range and let us all know your impression of it.

Just my .22 cents worth.

CADiver, I hope you enjoy your new pistol!!

I had the P-01, really liked it and became used to it. I then decided I wanted something heavier for banging steel and stuff, so i went with the SP-01 Tactical because it has a decocker and so is identical in operation to my P-01. They make great partners.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I'm looking forward to shooting it.

Pitbull - the only SP01 that is legal for sale in our wonderful state of California is the basic SP01. That's fine by me :)

I also have a P01 that I like a lot. It fits me very well and I love shooting but, like you, I want something heavier with longer sight radius for target shooting and faster target re-acquisition. On all accounts, the SP01 should be a keeper!

CADiver, could you enlighten me about the CA law: does it prevent you from driving to Oregon or Nevada and purchasing non-CA approved versions of the SP-01?

I can't imagine that when folk move to CA from FL or TX, that they are forbidden to bring non-CA approved handguns purchased in other jurisdictions?

Paul:

I had no idea that CA only allowed the SP-01 to be legally sold in the state. What is up with CA? I have the Sp-01 Tactical since I liked the decocker on the P-01.

You usually have to show proof of residency when purchasing firearms and my only valid driver's license is for CA. My utility bills, vehicle registration, etc, are all CA. IF you purchased a non-roster handgun BEFORE moving to California that would be fine, but if you are a legal resident of California you can not go across state lines and bring in a non-roster handgun - its all about when you acquired the handgun and whether you were a CA resident at that time. If you live in CA but have another state's DL to show residency in that state then you COULD do it, but in CA, the DMV requires changing of DL to CA if you stay beyond 20-days (I think ... that was many years ago when I first moved to CA). I'm not well versed on CA DOJ regulations so please do not take what I say as gospel - some of the wording is a little vague and open to some interpretation and I am not trained to inteprete any of it!

Its not impossible to obtain a non-roster handgun, but its a sticky area and something I don't want to test. I am completely fine with the SP01, although the Shadow already has many of the upgrades I would like to get, plus an additional magazine. What I would really have liked that's not available on the SP01 is the deeper cuts on the trigger guard and beaver tail. I could get it machined on the SP01 but then I'd have to have it refinished, etc. Not sure if its worth it or how much difference it would make for me.

Poor me ... I'll just have to do with the lowly ol' SP01 (that was typed with a lot of sarcasm in my fingers  ;D ).

Going tomorrow to fill out the DROS, then its a 10-day wait before its in my possession.

As an addendum to CADiver's info on the Byzantine regulations here in California;  It is possible to purchase a non-roster weapon such as, say a Shadow, if it's used.  The roster applies only to new weapons (unless they've recently changed that rule).

If I found a non-approved used Shadow on Guns America for instance, I could arrange the purchase through an FFL holder here in California.  It makes no difference what state the weapon ships from.

If this all sounds crazy........it is.

Sorry about the continued Ca thread drift but I have to ask: Jack, Have you imported a non-rostered used handgun from a non-immediate family member? If so, please PM the FFL name to me.

TIA,
Chuck

Yes, but it makes purchasing a handgun here so much more fun! I've looked at pistols and thought "wow, that's a beauty right there, I HAVE to have one!" .... then check the Roster. Nope. Not on the Roster. Look around and say "wow ..."

Well, you get the picture. :)

Fortunately, I'm immensely happy with my 97B and also like my P01 and I'm sure I will feel the same about the SP01. So, in the end, I'll end up with three pistols that I'm happy with - no regrets.

I recall promising myself that I would only get one handgun ... then amended that promise to two ... then three. This wasn't supposed to happen! Ahhhh .....but it is so much fun shooting these pistols I couldn't help it!  I'm very happy with CZ as a firearm manufacturer, they are very nice guns.

:)
