put the end of the guide rod through the guide rod hole in the front of the slide.  It's probably more challenging to do with the stainless one than the plastic one.

OK.........Walked away and had a bite to eat.  Went back and put the slide in a padded vise.  I then used the padded handle of pliers and moved the head of the guide side to side till I found the sweet spot and it popped in.  It took me 30 minutes to do this!!!  I need a beer........

DUDE!!  Do you have Parkinson's?!  Or did you try to this with your feet?  It shouldn't be that hard!

Maybe go back to using the plastic guide rod.  There is a little bend on mine near the plastic injection site. I use the bend to my advantage when putting it back together.  The tip arches up a little enabling me to slide it in the hole easily first or second try.  A simple firm grip on the slide while its on a table and firm controlled push against the spring and rod is all that's needed.

I'll put you up to a challenge.  Take it out and put it back in.  Then take it out and put it back in all over again.  The beer probably won't help.  But you'll get better at.  Just keep in mind that you'll have to do this anyway after each trip to the range to clean and relube the gun.

It just occurred to me!  Are you using a stainless guide rod and the original flat spring?  That would probably be very difficult to do!

Use the stainless guide rod with one of the Wolf recoil springs.  Those are round wire springs that squirm around quite a bit making it easier to install.

Or use the plastic guide rod with the flat spring or wire spring.

This may help you, it?s a little trick I learned from my buddy.  I can only attest that this works like a charm on the plastic guide rod.  I would imagine it would work with the SS one too.

1 ? Get a regular drinking straw.  Cut it in half.  Then take one of the halves, and make a slice lengthwise
2 ? Insert the straw into the guide rod hole from the outside.  Slicing the straw lengthwise in the first step allows the straw to fit through the hole easily.

3 ? With the straw in the hole, slide the guide rod and spring into the open end of the straw

4 ? Push the guiderod with the straw through the hole.  The straw will guide the guiderod ( duh ) right through the hole.  No wiggling, no fuss.

5 ? Pull the straw out of the hole from the outside.
6 ? You?re done!  Should take you about 4 seconds to get the guide rod in.

Like I said, it works with the plastic rod.  I hope this helps.

I have the SS guide rod and an 11 lb spring.  I'm telling you it was tough to put the the guide rod & spring in.  This is my 1st shadow, but I've had two other SP-01's.  The recoil spring is not a flat spring. Anyways its put together and I think I can get it back together again w/o a problem......maybe....

Oddjob,
You are not doing anything wrong.
I had the same problem with both of my Shadows the first time.  After shooting 200-300 rounds with it installed it now goes in as easy as the plastic rod.
9mm's can expand but .45's dont shrink.

What is the real benefit of a stainless guide rod?
The plastic one works just fine.

there is a sweet spot..
this may help if you want to do it..
recut the bevel on the tip of the guide rod this will allow the tip of the rod to fit the front of the slide sooner..
aslo can cut a bevel on the guide rod head..allows the same thing as the rod slips past the bottom barrel lug.

no big deal.

no huge benefit of the ss rod over the delin rod..
every now and then you see the delrin rod get chewed up..and I don't like the flex of the rod.
I use a tapered SS guide rod that Steve Bedair makes for me.

My guide rod came from Matt Mink.  I like the SS guide rod simply for the fact the plastic one does get chewed up a bit (but its easier to replace into the slide!!).  My other SP-01 has the SS guide rod as well.

Thanks for clarifying that.
