Took my p-01 out today!
« on: October 12, 2009, 07:12:05 PM »
Well its gettn cold out, so i decided to go shoot through all the ammo i had left lyin around.  It  warmed up to around 31 degrees today. It may be a while till i can go out again. The range was over populated today! I was able to get a spot, but i was the only pistol shooter there, and the closest i was able to get to the target was about 35 yards. Everyone was sighting in their rifles for deer season, and there's is a point we all have to stay behind. Im not looking to get shot, so i couldnt venture out any closer to the target, or id leave several shooters well behind me firing in my direction, but i still had fun. Not a good distance to practice at for practical uses, but i still manged to keep most of my shots on target. Im still very happy with my p-01 purchase. i had no failures of any kind while i was out. So far i now have about 600 rounds through the pistol with 2 failure to feed problems in the 1st 50 rounds fired. Also i had a plastic 10 round mag that was prolly the cause of the failures.
Just wanted to say how much i enjoy shooting this little pistol. Im still trying different grips and postures, and i still have a nasty habbit of jerking the trigger once on a while, but im getting better with it. Sorry i didnt take any pics of the range, or my target this time out, just getn too cold out. My best grouping i shot is what would have been a 5.5 inch group at 35 yards, but turned into a 7 inch group due to a flyer. Ammo used was blazer 115 gr, so basically pretty cheap stuff. im not an expert but slowly getn better. Anyway id say i thought that was decent for the compact 9mm. Still accurate enough for ccw and i remain confident in my cz. i doubt id ever have to shoot at a 35 yard target anyway, but nice to know where my bullets will land at that distance. gonna give her a good cleaning tonight, and maybe watch a dirty harry movie in the process. Hope everyone else here is having great experiences with their cz's also

Sounds great, glad you had a good time. 31 degrees? Winter temps out here are in the 50s, MAYBE 40s on a really bad day.... :P

North Dakota, sounds cold , I grew up in Mt. in my younger years and I remember school closures and complaining parents when combined -0 temps and wind chills could reach -40 below! Hitting low 30s in eastern Wa. and still haven't fired my P-06 >:( My friend and I are thinking of pitching a tent or some tarps for a make-shift tent and bringing a folding table, some propane accessories for heat and coffee, take our time and make a day of it. Jack Frost ain't stepping in the way of my itchy trigger finger ;D

:P Yes, I know, it's so cold in Arizona. I lived in Beatty Nv. for a little, ( gateway to death valley), could go coatless sometimes in the afternoon in December

I'm taking mine out this morning also.  Out of my heated house into my heated garage then in my heated van to the gun club which is 68* this time of year (it is 29*) outside as I type this in West Michigan.

Well, it was a chilly 70 when I left the house, had to roll the shirt sleeves down. ;D Warmed up to about 85 when I left 2 hours later, rolled sleeves back up. 8)
P01 performed admirably, of course, showing some love for one load. All shooting done at 10 yards, ( my favorite load testing distance), standing two hand hold.
This is a new target I decided to download from Targetz.com, which has a bunch or printable targets there, some very funny and strange.

This was the best group of the day, same load. I am OUT of XTPs now...can't find anymore, anyone have any they wanna get rid of, cheap? :o Notice old groups, not quite so nice - those were the TCs you see below.

Also got some very nice groups with my favorite light LRN load, and the gun worked like a champ....until....

this...

Had some OK groups with this weird looking thing, but the length of the bullet itself is not as consistant as I would like, so one actually gave me a failure to feed/lock into battery, and two failure to fire. Reingnition worked fine, go figure, Fed 100 primers. I loaded the round again, worked fine. Not a pistol failure, ammo only.

While I was typing this, I heard some yelling from my range bag in a distinct New England accent, demanding equal time since they went to the range together, soooo, to keep my Smith happy, here's what the most accurate revolver I ever owned did, two hand standing, double action shooting. BTW, old group on that one is also a 9mm TC group - saving paper by re-using targets!

Great range trip, well, they normally are! Edit to add a picture of the range buddies.

Forgot to add, one jarring note.  >:( Range was really busy, and in the pistol bay next to me a bunch of guys were doing IDPA style drills, sounded like thye were having a blast. I went over to introduce myself and see what was up, (haven't been able to shoot in a match in years), maybe get a shooting buddy. I got the cold shoulder hard enough to drop the temp 30 degrees. Darn shame, over two years in this town, can't find a single shooting buddy around here - the search goes on.

I have been getting 124 gn XTP bullets from Cabelas, I buy 500 at a time and only shoot them for HD practice.  I normally shoot 124 Laser Cast.

Back up to the high 50s and low 60s this week but no free time to test this baby out >:( If only my local gun range had a day care.

Hi Armoredman,

Read you post...

"I got the cold shoulder hard enough to drop the temp 30 degrees."

Wow, some people! Their loss! On the plus side people like that don't deserve to gain from your treasure trove of knowledge. Everyone here knows your value and has the greatest respect for you as a person and as a mentor. Trust me, if I lived within 75 miles of your location you would never have to shoot alone.
CZ 75 SP01 Shadow, strong enough for a man, but she likes it too!

I have no treasure trove! :D ;D Just too much free time on my hands!   ;) But thank you for the compliments. :) I know just enough to know I can never ever know it all.
