USPSA Production Holster's' for SPO1 Shadow?
« on: October 15, 2009, 02:30:35 PM »
Other than BladeTech,  who makes a molded (Kydex, Carbon fiber, Plastic) holster for the 9mm Shadow that is legal & well suited to  USPSA  Production class?

Do all the competitors use the Blade Tech DOS?  There doesn't seem to be many other likely choices.

If you have 1st-hand experience with 'other' molded holsters for the Shadow, I'd  appreciate your opinions .

Thanks

DJ

Blade Tech DOH is the overwhelming competition choice...because there isnt much else out there.

I'm not a huge fan of the BT DOH (I keep breaking the small screws and the belt loop shims) but the holster works and the DOH is nice for matches.  Its a 3 piece system held together by 6 little screws with a snap-in belt shim.  It also positions the gun too far out from the inner belt to be legal...I had to do some tweaking to get it in compliance (which prob contributes to the breakages I've had)

I asked Comp Tac if they were going to make an SP01 holster about a year ago...they said they would start working on one "soon" ...a few weeks ago I asked again.  They said they would start thinking about it "soon".  Comp Tac also doesnt make a DOH, but apparently has one in the works.

Ready Tactical said they could custom make one, but I'd need to send them my gun. A bit more hassle than I want to deal with.

I had Kytac make one for me, its very nice, but its not a DOH. I'm still getting used to it. He also needed the gun to mold it, but he was building one for someone else and already had their gun, so I lucked out there.

My son shot Production with his today and only had an Uncle Mike's nylon holster to use; so just for the heck of it, he dropped his Shadow into his old Blackhawk holster for the XD .45 Service.
Amazingly it was almost a good fit.  The trigger finger retention wouldn't quite lock, but the gun wasn't loose or binding, and his draw was smooth and fast. No rubs on the gun were seen.

I know it's not that easy, but it looks like Blackhawk could make one to fit with very minor changes.

He's going to get a BT DOH.

First day shooting this gun:  he had one of the smoothest runs I've ever seen him make on an all silouette stage with lots of movement. He shot all 'A's and was .3 secs behind one the fastest shooters.

I shot his Shadow today and WOW,  it's a very nice pistol.

I've been using a Hign Noon Yaqui Skin holster for shooting my SP-01 in USPSA Matches. So far it works relatively well for a $30.00 holster the only issue I have had is because it's an open design the rail on the front of the Sp-01 cut a hole in the pair of shorts I wore on my first match with it. Now I drape a small towel or rag under the holster it looks funny but saves $$$$ on buying new pants or shorts after every match.

Here's the link for the Yaqui Skin Holster.

No one's gonna to do it for you.

I'd asked Comp-Tac too. They said it is a very famous demand. It will be up in the short future. But don't know when. They said they have to buy the pistol, wait for it to arrive. Make a mold of it, and test it. This will take at least months to completed.  They asked me to watch for the news from email.  I told them I have no choice for now and go for the BladeTech.  The DOH is good and it can also change to non-DOH and become a belt holster good for IDPA rules.

Interesting update to my quest for an alternative to the BladeTech holster.
More than one holster company has told me they couldnt make one for the Shadow because they didnt have a gun to work with (if I wanted to ship them mine, they'd make a custom)  They also said that a 'blank' or 'dummy' version of the Shadow wasnt available (Blue Guns doesnt show one on their website)

But...Performance Holsters managed to get a 'blank' and is building a DOH style holster for me now.
I'm anxious to compare their DOH method with the BladeTech (the BT is a 3 piece system which has been flimsy and problematic for me)

Score one for the little guy http://www.performanceholsters.com/index.html

Another little holster maker, Kytac, built me a super nice belt holster.
Its great, really great, but its not a DOH style, and I miss the DOH feature.

I compete every week, so I'll review the Performance Holster as soon as I get it.
In the meantime, here's a picture of the dummy (the gun, not me;-)

Sorry for 'second hand' questions, but my son told me today that he couldn't put the Blade Tek DOH in the vertical position; because on the draw his thumb wouldn't clear the belt adapter area.

Is he doing something wrong, or is this the case??--we shoot tomorrow.

I dont have that problem myself...but I've run into several people who just dont like or havent adapted to the DOH style for that very reason.  A standard belt holster (or the BT without the DOH installed) lets the gun sit 'up' with nothing beside it except the shooters torso.
I think its an issue that can be solved by practice and dryfire, but YMMV.

A regular galco yaqui slide is what I use. I've had zero problems with it.

It's the same holster several EAA Witness Limited shooters in my clubs use.

I tend to like just the buckle of leather covering the trigger and trigger guard and the gun sticking out. I've always used this comp set up.

I've toyed with using a drop leg holster, but just don't like the longer reach to the gun. My yaqui slide is right there at waist level for a quick pull and run.

My Galco Yaqui slide is made for a 1911 full size and works perfect for me!

Here is the link for one on google

The Antichrome:  I agree with you and said the same to my son.  He's in the habit of "leading" the draw with his thumb, and it worked on a Blackhawk which he used with an XD for a long time.   We  shot yesterday and he did better than in practice.  I think he'll get over it with a little more time.

The  Model 525 Competition Holster does look pretty good.  It appears they narrow the belt loop and move it forward.  Maybe the thumb is clear for a complete grip on the grab.

dr:  Thanks.  That is the ride position he was used to with the Blackhawk & XD Service---many thousand rounds of habit.  It's a change for him to go to the DOH, but I think he'll adjust.  I bought the holster for him for Christmas.  I purposely didn't buy the Tech Lok belt adapter so he'd give the DOH a chance.  If he doesn't smile soon, I'll send for the high-ride belt adapter.

I expected to see  more USPSA/IPSC Production class geared holster options for the Shadow.
