No CZ 82 for me, NY state is a joke
« on: October 30, 2009, 09:51:34 AM »
OK, I saw the flyer from CDNN offering the surplus CZ 82's (like new) and figured I'd add it to my small cache of CZ's. But nooo, CDNN will no longer ship handguns to NY (I can't say I blame them). I should have stayed put in PA!!!

Hello,

I just ordered one from AIM surplus after CDNN wouldn't ship to CA either.  I havn't gotten it yet, but they kept the mags as they were over ten rounds, gave me a credit and shipped it to my FFL.  All may not be lost.

Yes, I did some searching and came across the ones available from AIM. My only concern is that they don't list them as excellent-like new. I'm mulling it over.

So far, my experience has been those not in "like new" condition still work fine but look really bad.  A little paint remover, extra fine sandpaper and Blu wonder Black finisher and the CZ looks BETTER than a "like new". It took about 4 -5 hours on the first one but that time was spread over a week.  I added some faux walnut grips from Designer Grips.

I got a CZ 82 from AIM in the last year or so. I live in NY State, and AIM's website declared "no sales to NY". However, they shipped it, no questions asked to an FFL in NY, including the hi-cap magazines. (Which due to the date of production, are legal in NY State) Good Luck.

Well, to put in my $.02...  I've never purchased a CZ82 from AIM, but I have purchased other handguns, rifles and ammunition from them.  They have ALWAYS exceeded my expectations when it came to condition of a firearm.  I know a lot of distributors vary as to what excellent is vs very good, ect...  But everything I've gotten from AIM has been great.

The "good" condition CZ82s I've seen (and I'm not talking about AIM anymore) typically show a decent amount of holster wear around the tip of the slide.  They also usually show a wear spots on the back of the grip wear the webbing of your thumb would rest and under the trigger guard.  These guns are not blued, but enameled...   Still, they field strip easily which should make general clean up not so difficult.  For a more complete tear down, there a few parts that are tricky to install/uninstall.  One of them is the slide lock lever spring, which, unfortunately, also has a tendency to come out of some of these surplus guns.  But with a good bit of patience and a steady hand, you'll get it.

Thanks Sbroomheadersr for posting about your Blu Wonder experience.  You used the gun black rather than the blue?  Could you give me a little more info regarding that?  I've heard Blu Winder doesn't smell as bad as a lot of the cold blues.  How would you rate the finished product?  My parts gun is all together now and 100% functional.  I just want to get it back to the range for a final sight in after drifting the rear sight and I am going to be stripping it down to the frame again for a refinish.  I've been toying with the idea of duracoating it in a digital camo pattern...  But the ease of Blu Wonder is making me think of trying to blue it first, throw on some wood grips and see how it looks.  If I'm not happy, I can duracoat later.

I used the Black instead of the Blue because I wanted a look "close" to original and I wasn't sure that the Blue would get that dark.

The hardest part was the stripping down to the metal.  Their gun cleaner, that you use just before putting on the Blue/Black, smells like some of the cleaning agents used in the bathroom.  One of the ingredients is ammonia.

When you heat the metal just make sure you don't get it too hot.  It really needs to be warm to the touch.  Hotter than that and you get a rainbow tint to the finish.  A second coat will fix it easily.

Their 1 oz kit says it will do 2 - 3 pistols but I was only able to do 1.7 pistols.  The slide on my second CZ 82 was about 1/3 done when I ran out.  I did put about 5 coats on the first CZ 82.  I wanted it as dark as I could get it.

I have a more detailed post here: Refinishing my CZ82 ** I'm done w/ PICS **

After adding the faux walnut grips I now have this: New grips for my CZ 82

Thanks for the info.  Your pics look great and the finished product looks terrific.  I think I'll definately give that a try and see if I like it before going the duracoat route.

I had heard about teh chemical/ammonia smell.  I was more concerned with how some cold blues smell like rotten eggs (sulphur) and leave your gun smelling that way for years afterwards.  I had heard Blue Wonder doesn't do that, and what you said tends to go along with that.

Originally, I was plannign on tearing down to the bare frame and refinishing the whole thing.  But, lately I was thinking of just refinishing the exposed parts.  Like you did...  I've already had to install a few of the internal springs on mine (they were missing when I got it) to get it working again.  I don't relish the thought of removign them and reinstalling them again.  I'm not a glutten for punishment  ;)

Hello,

I received mine from AIM last week, the condition was not perfect, it had a small bit of holster wear but most of the damage to the finish was from the import marking.  The wear was actually very similar to the photo in their ad.  I field stripped it, cleaned it and lubed it up, everything functioned fine, the mag release is a bit tough to push with my thumb but works fine with my trigger finger.  I shot it last weekend and it worked flawlessly for 300 rounds. Recoil was snappier than I expected but I suspect it has a weak recoil spring as it launches the spent brass into orbit (well 20-30 feet anyway) Have a new spring on order from Wolff.  Loads of fun for $200.

Cheers, Eric

The mag releases on my 2 CZ 82s were both pretty stiff when I got them.  When I took off the trigger guards to refinish them, I used extra break cleaner and then CLP on the release areas.  After working them some more and with a little more lube they work better now.  Of course, YMMV!

Thanks for the tip, I took the mag release apart and cleaned the goo out and it works much better.  I also installed the new 16.5 Lb  recoil spring from Wolff and the brass stays in the zip code and it is not very snappy anymore.

Cheers, Eric
