Busted is this common?
« on: November 12, 2009, 07:16:40 AM »
I saw this on the Canadian forums and was wondering if its a problem to be aware of or is it just a fluke/ bad receiver, or is ours reinforced(or should be)  there and if it were to happen is at an easy fix?.

I would consider it a fluke as I've never seen anything like that before.  I wish there was a good pic from within the inside of the receiver - that would really help to see the problem (broken/chipped grip nut hole or undersize grip nut).  Those pics only give a good photo of the bent sheet metal of the trigger guard assembly - it doesn't show what the receiver looks like.  Sheet metal is not going to retain the nut very well.

Do you think someone cranked down way too much when tightening the grip screw and pulled the grip nut through?

It looks like it was just the grip plate holding it.  I don't see any metal from the receiver bent out.  Probably the hole was too big.
Like CzechPoint says, we really need to see it from the inside.

As far as i can see he screwed up on installing the handle, or i hope he did, this is the only thing that i found a little discouraging about the rifle, since our gremlin is fixed(bolt tab).  Im wondering if that area may need attention or if its just some klutz using his strength instead of his mind(no offense meant)I really don't want my handle busting off somewhere in the woods if i take a spill. but i think im just reading to much into it like i do with every perchance i make, im just not into buying 15 rifles and keeping them locked up, i want to buy one and have it last.

Unfortunately the original poster of this did not take a picture of the inside but he said the following.

"Niftly little unit. Much lighter and smaller than what I thought it was going to be. Very easy to strip.
However....... I'm not so sure about the quality.
To those of you who say its all milled, well its NOT.
The trigger guard is NOT milled.
Heres the pics of my Brand new 858 after using 1/4 inch ratchet 'hand tight', to install a new Fab Defense pistol grip.... so far - NOT IMPRESSED.
I was installing a new Fab Defense pistol grip. I was being extra careful not to torque to much on it because the pistol grip is plastic......
Has this happened to anyone else???

As you can see the tabs that hold the nut behind the sheet metal are freaking TINY. I really hope that this is not a tell on how the rest of my 858 experience will be.I had it all snugged up and I picked up the gun by the grip without supporting it at the hand guard and the pistol grip ripped right out!

Well I used a 1/4" ratchet like a screw driver just putting it in hand tight. It just kept going and going....
To me it looks like the part that failed is the trigger guard. The nut inside the received is only held in by the stamped metal on the trigger guard as far as I can tell."

I just picked up my vz-58 by the FAB ergonomic pistol grip. My rifle is a bit heavier with the addition of the aftermarket stock and EOTech. Hmm, no wiggle, stayed right on, no twisting, torquing, bending, tearing, nada. Even tried shaking it holding by grip only - hey, if it's gonna fall aprt, I'd need to know now instead of when "bad times" happen....nothing, solid as a rock.
Must be something specific to that rifle, or Canadian imports, dunno, but my D-Technik is just fine.
