Range Report
« on: February 21, 2010, 09:08:04 PM »
I am new to the forum and to CZ weapons. I bought a PCR last weekend on the recommendation of a friend. Now actually I had been looking for a P239 Sig., when I could not find one for less than $700 in my area I started searching for an equivalent (please don't flame me here). Well I found the PCR for $529 at Academy sports and bought it. I took it out for the first time today and the 1st five shots at 7 yards I did not believe it was me holding the gun. I hate to admit this, but this the only pistol I have that seems to aim itself. Anyway, I am more than pleased, I am going to try to upload one of my targets. I would like to ask a couple of question if I may.

When cleaning up afterwards I noticed the plastic guide rod had taken a bend. I'm sure this must be normal but is a stainless replacement available and is it really necessary?

Also are rubber or plastic extensions available for the mags as a little room at the bottom would be nice?

This will basically be a range gun any wear issues that I should be aware of?

Thanks for any help, RJM

P.S. The target posted was at 50' shooting as fast as could while still having a sight picture. Please no laughter. ;D

I too, am a recent convert to the CZ line, having bought a PCR about a month ago. You are correct, they are very accurate and reliable handguns.
My guide rod also showed a slight bend and I have read on this forum that a metal guide is available. I am sure that someone with more knowledge on the subject will shortly join in and advise.
Good luck with your new CZ PCR!

There is a rubber mag base that gives you a grip extension -  I find them to be very comfortable. Check CZCustom.com or CZ-USA.com. I paid less than $10. for mine.

You own a gun with the most comfortable grip I've ever felt. At 7 yards it's a point-and-shoot marvel.

Who's laughing? Good shooting! 8) The PCR is an excellent sidearm, I own one myself. I have to say I still have my original guide rod, no issues, but some do get the stainless steel ones.

Welcome RJM!

I took my PCR out to shoot this weekend and it truly impresses me everytime. This is the 3rd time i got to get out with it this winter (got it in December).

I had a chance this time to relax and shoot and enjoy the day and work on targeting. At 10-15 yards I was shooting three inch groups, which is really good for these old eyes. I decided to shoot from an improvised rest to see how the gun really shoots.

I blew the bullseye out with a 2" grouping. That tells me it is the pistol and not the shooter for accuracy. Yeah I know, you want pics.... I'll see if I can find the target this week... ;D )

But yes, they are GREAT guns, and I love mine and my CZ82, great pair.

Have fun, stay safe and keep up the pics and posts!

The plastic guide rod has a "natural" bend you might say. It is common, and nothing to worry about, they have held up for thousands of rounds. Some people like the stainless guidrods, but do a search here about this subject. Not long ago someone posted some questions and pics about possible damage to their PCR from the metal slide rods.

It seemed that possibly since the PCR is aluminum alloy there was bending and wear from the slide slamming against it and the alloy frame. (Sorry it late and I am tired so my descriptions may not be clear). I don't recall any posts saying yay or nay on the subject, but many PCR owners have converted to steel slide rods with no apparent problems at this time.

If this is your range gun, you may be putting quite a few rounds through her.
Also you may want to limit shooting P+ ammo through her for the same reason (stress on alloy frame, and certainly don't want to send +P+ ammo through her.

My philosophy is If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It, but make sure you have some extra parts around in case it does break! Some extra springs and a slide rod should last you awhile.

Have fun, stay safe...

Thanks for the replies everyone:

NVCZ, I hear you on the don't fix what ain't broke....I remeber when S&W came out with the 908 and it had a plastic guide rod to hold down production cost. But seemed like everyone replaced it with the stainless rod from the 3913 as it was a direct fit. I figured this may be true here and seeing that for me weight is not an issue (range weapon) I would replace it once and forget it. I certainly do not want to damage my new toy if you feel this could stress the frame. Just letting you know where I was coming from. RJM

Hey RMJ,
You got yours where I found mine and the same price. I could not find one 2 months ago.All the big gun stores wanted to order it and it was alot higher. I was in Academy looking for a Sig 40 which they had. While I was waiting I saw the PCR and could not believe my eyes let alone the price.I got both of them.
I have a 239 .40 .It's a pretty good gun too.Right now,I could not tell you which one I like more. They both have good features. I wanted the PCR to carry. So you have to decide? 7 shots of .40 or 14 shots of +p 9mm ?
As far as the 908...Thats a great gun too. I have 3 @ 3rd gen smiths still. I had a 457 with the plastic guide rod.It seemed to work ok. I hear the Beretta 92 people talk of the plastic guide rod .They say just have a spare but never heard of one breaking. But,they do talk about a metal one doing something (can't remember) and locking the whole gun up .
 Welcome aboard.

Hey Rich thanks for the welcome.

When did you pick yours up? Mine was a on a weekend price reduction, not advertised. I shoot their Monarch ammo which was on sale too and when I went back to get more ammo, they had sold out of the PCR's. Man behind the counter didn't know if they are even getting any more, so I feel lucky that I picked it up when I did.

I never owned a 908 but do own a 4506. I picked up the info about the guide rods lurking on the S&W forum. I don't believe our guns would fail per se with the plastic rods, but if it turns out to be a consumable type item I would replace it. Having said that I take to heart what NVCZ said about possible frame damage, and now you added the Beretta story, so unless someone can say no harm will be done, I will buy extra plastic rods.

RMJ,
 Oh,
I picked it up Jan 11th.Maybe I got lucky too and just stumbled onto it.You aren't in Texas are you?I am.
I've seen Academy does their little tricky sales like that. I'll say one thing,When they put something on sale,It's a real discount.
Monarch ammo is Prizi** ammo how ever it's spelled. I have had some luck with it.I had bad luck with one box that was so weak,it would not cycle the action on a sig 9mm.
4506 is cool. I have 4513,3913,6906. all great guns. Is that a compact 6 shot? If it is ,it's close to the 4513.
If you read the previous post on jams, maybe we'll see what yours does. I think it is that PCR don't like short hollow points.

Rich,

I am in South Carolina...I have not had a problem yet with Monarch...I've shot their 9mm, 45, .38 and.357.So far so good. My 4506 is full size and seems larger than a 1911. So I am not sure what the 06 is for....I bought that gun new in 1994...and still don't understand S&W coding.  ???

RMJ,
 Open this link
http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg01-e.htm
And scroll down a ways.It has the Decoder. It means it's a Stainless Steel frame.
Oh yeah, I had a 4566 .It was a monster.Felt like a combat 1911 only in DA/SA.
A great gun.Just not really concealable.Almost wish I did not get rid of it but, I'd never carry it and I have too many full size 45 .
Ok,SC I didn't know academy was over there too.Well I guess we got lucky.

here is a link about some discussion of guide rods in PCR's

http://www.czforumsite.info/index.php?topic=1691.0

I recall some posts and pics showing some possible damage from steel guide rods, maybe between November and January? Anyone recall that posting? I have not found it yet, thought it was this forum...

Thanks guys, very good info. I am leaving the guide rod alone. I need another trip to the range.   O0
