Personally, I wish the government would do a national mandate on concealed carry laws. It would be nice when traveling to have the same rights and privileges under Virginia, West Virginia, etc. as my home state does.

Even with a traveler's guide to CCW laws in states it can be tough to know the laws and you always run the risk of running into an LEO who doesn't know the law in his state or that your state has a reciprocity agreement with his state.

drnickels comment is a 2010 restatement or manifestation of Benjamin Franklin's reservations after the Constitutional Convention

"There are several parts of this Constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them. ... I doubt too whether any other Convention we can obtain, may be able to make a better Constitution. ... It therefore astonishes me, Sir, to find this system approaching so near to perfection as it does; and I think it will astonish our enemies..." Benjamin Franklin

We may never fully resolve the underpinnings of the Great Compromise (Large State vs Small State Plan/Connecticut Compromise/ Great Compromise of 1787 ). However, this points out the tricky relationship between States Rights and Federal Rights.  If we were to have a Federal mandate much like the Uniform Commercial Code ( UCC ) then we could accomplish a Nationwide reciprocity of Concealed Carry Permits.  I'm sure that people in Indiana, Arizona, et al would have heartburn with more stringent guidelines as well as states, such as California, any States requiring Qualifying, Firearm Registration, Magazine Capacity restrictions, etc. having to relax their standards.  My greatest fear would be that rather than relax some regulations while tightening others the lawmakers would take the accede to the safest course which would be to standardize the most restrictive regulations. The answer might be something that was kicked around in the late 70s / early 80s. This being a Federal Concealed Carry Permit.  As I recall, what prevented this was the States did  not want this Federal regulation owing to the 10th Amendment. Strangely enough, this is what is being used right now to stop the Health Care Reform Legislation. The upside, at least we have a form of Government where we can have this problem.

No, we don't want a national CCW - what the feds license, they can take away. Hopefully, in three months, the 2A will be held as incorporated against the states, and more restrictive states will start loosening up in the face of multiple legal challenges.

It has long been my opinion that MSNBC is an liberal extremist organization bent on spreading leftist propaganda about most political issues. After reading the 2 articles posted above my opinions have been concreted. The article itself is steeply slanted toward the anti-gun side of the argument.

Despite the spin MSNBC put in the article, they still didn't get the response I suspect they were hoping for. The results of the poll in the first article that Norseman posted basically say that about 82% of respondents feel safer knowing people like me are out there with concealed weapons.

This lifts my spirits, b/c if 82% of the people that read articles on this site feel safer knowing there are concealed weapons in a crowd, there is hope for this country after all.
The U.S. Constitution: frustrating liberals since 1789.
