Brno Mod 2 history Q? s

Can anyone tell me please when was the first year the Mod 2 was produced ?
In what year was the scope mount dovetail changed from 5/8 to 3/8 dovetail ?
I bought a New Mod 2 in 1976[5/8dovetail] [foolishly sold it ] was well made with very nice stock ,i recently bought a 1979 mod two very stiff bolt, some poor machining ,else where on rifle .Trying to find another one with 5/8 dovetail. Thankyou for any information

Brno started making the ZKM452 (Model 2) in 1956.   They had 16 mm dovetails.
About 1967, production was switched to CZ U.Brod, but still stamped "BRNO."  Originally CZ putting together Brno made parts, under Brno inspectors.  They started using 12 groove barrels instead of 6.
In 1974, CZ began making the 452 completely of their own manufacturing, with plastic mag wells and 14 mm dovetail.  Some time later, the "2" became "2E" with some changes.
I'm not sure when they stopped calling them Brno, and started using the name CZ.  Or, when they went to the 11 mm dovetail.
The 3/8" dovetail is on specific models for the American market, rest are still 11 mm.  Since the European designation (in mm) is measured at the top, vs. the American (in inches) bottom of the dovetail, I don't know what a 5/8" dovetail is.  I assume you mean 14 mm, which is ~5/8" at the top, and what 1976 CZ made Brnos had.

Good question. I will be following all replies because I too now own a BRNO Mod 2EH. Although someone told me that the Mod 2 I possess is in fact a CZ? The Mod 5 is a BRNO though..... Confusing...

Hi all am glad I found this site, because I also have a bruno model 2 made in czeculslovakia.I bought my rifel in 1975. The groove every one is talking about is 5/8 th  or 14mm like the other guy says. This groove is for the accessory peep sight that you can purchase, it slides right on the groove, I have the peep sight manufactured in czeculslovakia with the cz insignia on it and bruno stamped also.Now when I purchased the peep sight for the rifle the front sight need a riser block for the front peep sight to slide on after you take off the hood. I need that riser block! Does any one know where I can find one.

I can't give you dates and features of the various models (I would have to find the appropriate papers in my junk pile), but Brno made several models up until CZ took over production. These models ran concurrently with other models not consecutively. 

The model 5 for instance was originally made in the late 50's using a Model 2 receiver and a Model 1 Barrel arrangement. Rumour has it that this was for a special order, but I have seen examples stamped in the 70's (from memory) so this may not be true.

The Model 2 was started in the mid 50's and can be said to be still manufactured by CZ up to the present.

Note: The Model 455 will replace the Model 2 receiver and barrels and so will end the run of the mighty Model 2 - and thereby drive up second hand values (?) as happened to Brno rifles when CZ took over. Over here, an old Brno Model 2 in good condition is nearly the same price as a new CZ, an old Model 5 is about 50% higher than a new CZ!

I think that all CZ models (excepting the 455's) are based on the Model 2 receiver with either the iron sighted barrel (eg Lux) or the now more common no sights barrel (eg American). The Model 455 is a new receiver barrel combination based on the Model 2 but with some obvious and major changes.

U.S. and Australian scope mount manufacturers classify Brno/CZ/Tikka mounts by the dimension at the top of the dovetail whereas Sportsmatch classify by the critical measurement at the bottom of the dovetail.
