hello all,

Im Adam just wanted to start off by by saying that im from ft hood just got back from my 3rd tour in iraq and now i can finally have my own hand gun now that my wife will let me! i have been looking around the killeen area the last few days and was going to get a CZ 75BD police 9mm but i didnt like the idea of not having a actual safety on the gun since im new with hand guns and have 3 lil girls that love to get into things. but a lil more shopping around i found a almost new CZ 75B 40cal that if the place still has it come next friday will be mine!! so i was hoping you guys could give me some tips on what to look for in a used gun. well thanks

Welcome, Adam, from a fellow Texan.  I'm way north of you, but still on the proper side of the border.  It seems like an awful lot of new members are Texans.  At the rate we're going, there will be more CZs in Texas, than in the Czech Republic.

You're a vet?  Let me not just welcome you, but also say thank you...my sincerest thanks to you for everything you've done, to serve this country.  You have, not just my respect, but my awe.

And, a question.  You've been to Iraq 3 times for active duty, and you don't know about handguns?  That's surprising, to say the least.

ya i know ive been in about 7 years and 3 deployments in a semi non combat mos (14 series) will do that where only the officers and senior enlisted got and fired m9s. 2 out of my 3 deployments i carried around a M16 and the other a 249, now i do know my way around a AR fairly good just not hand guns. now ive handled a m9 and have fired one but only once :(

Welcome to the forum! What business are you looking at for the CZ75B 40 cal? There may be a better option than the high prices around Killeen area. I live just west of you.

Welcome aboard.  I did some work for a civ contact company on post a few yrs ago.  I am way west in the state now, but my folks live in the area.  Good luck on that CZ!

Thanks for serving!

I know what you mean by a non combat arms mos, I was a Signal type for 21 years, and the Army alloted me  40 rounds to qual once a year, and I deployed to Somalia, Haiti and the first Gulf unpleasantness.... certainly not enough to get really familiar with a handgun. Best advice I ever got as a 2LT was from a Vietnam vet (still serving at the time), was, "Buy an AR and a 1911 and practice, practice, practice." Spent much more of my own money on ammo than the Army ever did for me. CZ is a good choice (own 4 myself), and Texas, as you have heard, is CZ heaven, so shop around.  I would offer you one bit of old guy advice.  Kids are not fooled by safeties, so...... I have small pistol safes in two rooms, one in my bedroom and one in my reloading room.  I lock up whatever I'm not using, period.  Saves a lot of worry.

Welcome to the forum - lots of great information here.  I happen to be in San Antonio on business, as I read this, but live in West Virginia.  If you are looking for a used handgun, shop around, a lot -don't make an impulse purchase.  I love the CZ 82, myself - I carry one daily - it replaced my Kimber .45, because I like it better and it only cost  $219.  Find other shooters in your area and see if you can shoot their handguns - find something YOU like and that feels right in your hand when you shoot it.

That said, get a safe and always use it - kids are curious and smarter than we give them credit for . . . hiding a weapon isn't good enough - they WILL find it.  A small pistol safe will protect it from the kids.

Thanks for your service -I did 20 plus years and my son spent last year in Iraq - a 19D Cavalry Scout, doing convoy security out of Balad for his tour.

Sure!  CZ-USA CZ 75 Manual at CZ-USA's web site!  Hope you love your new pistol - and good idea about not having it and ammo in the house with kids until you get a safe!

Welcome.  I was stationed there in the Regular Army.  I came back many times when I got into the National Guard.  It was like old home week.

My wife later worked at Darnall Army Community Hospital in Medical Records and as a part-time first responder moving and help the Chief of Trauma Surgery working with the seriously wounded troops from the Sand Box.

Other than post regs, enjoy shooting.  Take care.

Welcome to the CZ cult. I own 3! You have made a great choice! Looks like a clean gun. Once you shoot it you will be addicted.

3 tours! You have my respect and my thanks from a fellow Texan. North of you in Arlington. Good luck!

By the way, the comment....now that my wife will allow it......from one man to another, it is time to man up and get control of your crib! Maybe that is why I have divorced twice?  :)
