I looked at the pics on the CZ site and it does appear that the SP-01 release is longer. CZ sells them for about $35, so I'll order one and let you guys know how it works out.

Did you ever do this?  If so, how'd it work out?

Sorry all.  I was away from the board (and my CZ) for a while.  I'm now able to order the other slide release and I will report back.

And, when slingshoting, you must take the gun farther off target... But its still a good skill to practice.

As noted above, they are now teaching troops to use the slide release (while making them familiar with the slingshot method), as they've found that under pressure (in combat) that the slingshot sometimes doesn't let the slide go home with full force -- which then forces them to use the clearance drill. The old technique has created problems for troops in combat. Wearing gloves might make it worse.

(I'm sure this type of "new" thinking will be treated as sacrilege by many of the old timers -- but its based on real world results.)

I would think that a properly-shapped piece of metal, attached with JB Weld, might work pretty well...  Getting that piece to fit right would be the real issue.  (I do have an extended slide stop for a standard CZ, but don't know whether it would work in a 97B as the widths of the frame might be too different.  I no longer have a 97B.  It was too big for my hand.)

I believe slide stops for the standard CZs will work on the 97B. At least the one on my 97B is dimensionally identical to the one on my 75B SA in .40.
The bold type giveth, the fine print taketh away.

Yeah.  Call their 800 number.  Email with CZ-USA, unless addressed to a particular person, is a hit-and-miss proposition.  (Shouldn't be, but it is.)

I called CZ-USA and they sold me the slide release for the SP-01 with the edges ground down a bit to fit the 97B properly.  They only charged the regular price for the part--$35.00

That is impressive customer service!

It is about 5 mm longer.  It makes a huge difference.

Something doesn't smell right here... I've used the slingshot technique for almost 20 years and have never had a problem.  Retracting the slide and releasing definitely imparts more forward inertia on the slide than simply thumbing the release.  Perhaps these troops have been trained to "pinch" the slide with the thumb and forefinger... which could lead to a less than secure grip on the slide.  We train our troops to use an overhand grip, which allows the most strength to be delivered to the process: the strength of the gun hand can even drive forward as the off hand rips the slide rearward.  We've found this technique works even for small statured women who have trouble retracting the slide the other way.
The gun is far more likely to fail to go fully into battery while simply thumbing the slide release.

That is exactly what I did for my 97.  Tell them it is for a 97 and they will reshape the edge to fit the gun perfectly for no extra charge.    Look here for pictures and a description:  http://www.czforumsite.info/index.php?topic=18422.0
