Dry fire and snap caps?
« on: February 17, 2011, 12:13:06 PM »
I need to do some dry fire drills and was wondering if I should use snap caps or not. If anybody has some videos to post of malfunction clearing, draw, trigger control drills I would appreciate it. Anyone used the magpul dvd art of the dynamic handgun?

Whether a snap cap is needed or not, I dunno.  But I use one anyway.

well i was told that the trigger on the SP-01 gets better with use.  i was also told that dry -firing may damage the firing pin.  i didnt want to take a chance so i bought a set of a-zoom snap caps for about $15 for 5.  why take the chance.  what i dont know is, how many pulls each one is good for.  some say indefinitely, some say 3000 pulls, who knows.  i also read on another forum that you can make your own by removing the primer on a spent shell and inserting a cut-to-fit pencil eraser there.  anyway, if you are not sure, why take the chance?

get a small o ring gasket and put where the firing pin is and snap away. just don't forget to remove it when you load up for real.

I've been watching the magpul art of the dynamic handgun dvd, and it's really good. It's clear no nonsense and has high quality production. Lots of good tips and drills. I made some grip changes based off the dvd and am learning how to clear malfunctions properly. Really impressed with the dvd.

After i read some on the o-ring thing, i went to the LHWS and purchased a few different sizes. Wasnt able to take the gun inside to match to size :-\./ Anyway for my SP-01 it seems that the 3/8 x 1/4 x 1/16 O-rings works well. Not too fat and bulky, not too thin. It fits well around the firing pin.  I also bought a 7/16 x 1/4 x 3/32 ring, which is a little fatter but takes up more room and perhaps hits the firing pin just a tad when hammer drops. I do like the o-rings when dry firing, and they will probably last a long time assuming i dont lose them.

Just wondering if there are any thoughts on the pressure it puts on the hammer assembly as it comes down and if that may have any long term effects on the parts???

The firing pin and spring 'normally' absorb the hammer impact.

O-rings of the right thickness will do the same.
